When you invent something you have a legitimate argument for being allowed a monopoly for a period of time.

Is Ricky talking again?  :zoinks:

They didn't invent the search engine. I don't even know why people went all gung-hoey on it either, because people were wild for Google long before all these "personalized searches" and such also (which I abhor by the way. "Personalization" is just a very clever way of cencoring necesary information from the masses. People are allready focused on consumerism, and by allowing people to simply never-again encounter serious information, they are paving the road for entire generations of dangerous apathy, the likes of which are yet unencountered.)
As far as I can tell, Google's colorful logo was what set it apart, not much else... and I still can't get past how fiiine everyone is with Google owning Youtube :I
It's almost as if people ASSUME it will end there. It won't. We will let them - and Google will buy more and more stuff, primarily media and information related stuff. They will own it all, and we will give it to them, because we are apathetic enough.

My only hope is that shit hits the fan, and that we all end up decapitating CEO's, flooding the streets with rivers of blood!!! >:0

They invented the algorithms that they use that are so effective.  Should they just have to hand that over to anyone else because they are successful in using it?

TBH, none of this stuff bothers me.   It certainly doesn't rise to the level of OMG THE GOOGLES OWNS THE INTERWEBZ AND EVERYONE MUST NOW DIE  :viking:

I never said they should give away what they invented, or that everyone must die. Stop being a dick.
And I'm not saying Google will destroy the world or anything like that.

All I'm saying is: There should be many available alternatives, to allow for sound competition. Competition is what protects the consumer. This is common knowledge, and a foundation for a free society. "LOL U THINK EVYRONE MUZT DIE" no, piss off. I'm saying they have taken step after step unchallenged - steps that haven't been taken by others before. As soon as they took ownership of Youtube, the restrictions were drastically increased. This is fact. Along with all of their unwarranted involvement in the whole wikileaks deal, "LOL HUBBA BUBBA WIKILEAKS IS EVUL :autism: " no, get a clue or fuck off.

I'm pretty sure Google will eventually be replaced by something else. Not that they will disappear but someone will take their place.

Well, that wouldn't necesarily be a good thing, if it simply means someone else buys them and all their assets.
It just means further unification of all information outlet.
This trend is disastrous enough allready. It is very worrying when you begin to trace where your newspapers and news programs come from, even all the way over here.
I'm of course not not singling out Google, as some kind of Evil Lord Company, but they are the best and most glaring house-hold example of monopoly allowed to happen. Even encouraged. It is enfuriating the level of ignorance among the people - and we wonder who's to blame for economic crises? I am hoping for destruction every day :I

We must be careful not to assume everything "follows a cycle". We don't know the future, and when something veers too far away from what we're used to, we should be attentive to it.
Remember when Disney owned half the entertainment industry? Oh wait, they still do :0

Or when the best search engine was called Deja Vu.

I do remember those days.

Hell, AOL used to have a near monopoly on the entire internet here in the US.  Because we were all too dumb to know better.  Where are they now?

I get it, you never got to feel cool and awesome back in college, and you're desperately making up for it now - but consider this: Disney shows no sign of backing down. Time Warner shows no sign of backing down. Sony corporation stands strong.

I literally have no idea what you are going on about.  You don't seem yourself today :dunno:

Disney just bought Lucasfilm, and I just bought a Sony  :viking:

I get snarky when people reply with an "attitude" while seeming to think I wont notice, cus it's like saying "You're stupid" twice in a single sentence. Odeon didn't reply with an attitude, and he got a different treatment from me.
It really isn't rocket science: I notice when people are being "wise". You can respond in a normal manner, you know. It doesn't make you "weak" ::)

Whatever... I said what I had to say about the subject. Let the derailment begin :santa: :bounce: :asthing: :hyke:
