Professor Brian Cox claims he was banned from attempting to contact aliens because BBC bosses feared it could breach health and safety regulations.

The Stargazing Live presenter said that paranoid bosses put a stop to plans to 'contact' the planet Threapleton Holmes B over worries that aliens could breach the corporation's editorial guidelines.

Cox told BBC 6 Music: "We decided that we'd point the Jodrell Bank telescope at the planet that had been discovered by these two viewers and listen because no one had ever pointed a radio telescope at it and you never know.

"The BBC actually said, 'But you can't do that because we need to go through the regulations and health and safety and everything in case we discover a signal from an alien civilisation'."

The physicist admitted he was shocked at the decision, as they could have made an important discovery.


That is sooooo fucked up.  Health & Safety.  My fucking arse.   They were not so bothered about health and safety when they were paying
pedo's to fiddle with kids in their  dressing rooms.

They also refuse to name the latest discovery of a pedo ring involving ex tory MP when just about every other news source does.  Sir Peter Morrison.  His name is everywhere but they just won't say it! 

I hate the BBC ???

The BBC are good at making arrogant assumptions like that.

They are also good at making crap decisions on behalf of us stoopid licence fee payers. 

They are too bland to be a worthy news channel.  They don't ever 'break' stories anymore... they are too busy getting tied up with the government having their hands tied by the goverrnment.  :P

We want foul mouthed aliens, surely,  in any language :viking:

Doubt we would hear anything or they'd hear us anyway as that planet is too far away. ~50 light years away is a point where the radio transmissions would be so weak, it'd be drowned out by ambient cosmic radiation.

Nah, it can be done. It would require some equipment, though, and that equipment is tied up in other projects. Listening to aliens is not something you usually get funding for.
