Colorado, Washington Become First States to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Nov. 7, 2012

In a groundbreaking move, Colorado and Washington voters have passed referendums legalizing marijuana for recreational use. The drug is still banned under federal law.

Colorado's Proposition 64 to the state's constitution makes it legal for anyone over the age of 21 to possess marijuana and for businesses to sell it.

"The voters have spoken and we have to respect their will," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said in a statement. "This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through. That said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don't break out the Cheetos or gold fish too quickly."

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out especially since nationwide the number of people who favor legalization has past the 50% mark.  I think the country as a whole is moving in this direction and if the feds go into Colorado and Washington with a heavy handed tactics, which I am sure they will,  it will only blow up in their faces.

Obama has already said that he will direct the DEA to make this a low priority.  With no more elections to win he can act the liberal finally.

He still had an election to win then.  He doesn't now.   I am banking in a big way on a much more liberal Obama over the next four years ... especially the last two.  I can't tell you how badly I am praying for Scalia and Kennedy to drop dead soon.  I want Posner on the bench with a lifetime appointment.

The Hearst Smear Campaign of the 1930's is finally starting to wear off.

Although, i'm pretty sure a legalize pot sign will still make its way into the pile of protest signs any time there is a protest in one of the two states.

Same thing with his stance on gay marriage. He pretty much skirted the issue until he was firmly in office and then he voiced his support.

Hmm.  National news has been covering it just as much as CO, and usually in the same story.  Not sure why you missed it.  :dunno:

I knew it was at hand, the USA getting more liberal on marijuana than the Netherlands.
This is the first step. The policy in Colorado is now more liberal than the policy is here.

I agree w Doug Stanhope - as much as "medical marijana" is a good thing for all - we shouldn't forget that it is a sales pitch, and that reality is: Most people just want to get high, AND THAT'S OKAY because it's not all that dangerous, it doesn't harm anybody (while being legal, that is), and we have allready (hypocritically) made all kinds of more harmful stuff legal, such as anti-depressants, or fire-arms.

Marijuana, medical or recreational, should be free for anybody to use at their leisure. Those who don't like marijuana, or any other drugs, should shut their abstinent mouth, and mind their own goddamn business. They also should stop nagging about "pro life" or "anti gay" or any other matter that is none of theirs no stuff their nose into.
