I still remember their stupid slogan for the 55 mile per hour nationwide speed limit, which was put into place to save gasoline:

55 saves lives!

 ::) ::) ::) ::)

Why not 44 saves more and zero saves the most?

Are there other laws they haven't consulted you on?

Yes, the ridiculous speed limits on the highways, the ridiculous seat belt law, the dimmed headlight law(!), which must be about the greatest proof that Sweden is a country of jerks and cowards, even more than the gun law; the multiple taxes on things such like fuel to my car, the drug laws, the lack of freedom of speech, etc. In a democracy, there should actually be a referendum for any changing of the law deeply concerning most people in the country. The US actually was like that in the beginning.

I agree on the taxes--the fuel taxes are ridiculous.

Dimmed headlights, nope, I disagree. First of all, the dimmed lights are needed. By using them, a lot of accidents are avoided. I think there's a lot of statistics to show this. To keep your brights on when meeting another vehicle is dangerous.

Seat belts--it's a fact that seat belts save lives. They also save the taxpayer's money since the rest of us won't have to pay for your becoming a vegetable in intensive care.

The speed limits, again, I sort of agree, sort of disagree. The vast majority of our roads and freeways aren't built for higher speeds. Higher than the 90 kmph that's the norm, yes, perhaps, but rarely higher than 120 kmph. Also, the vast majority of Swedish cars don't have tyres that can handle speeds in excess of 140-150.

I'm sure you're longing for the autobahn in Germany (the rest of German freeways have about the same speed limits as we do), but some parts of the autobahn actually has speed limits. Also, a lot of it is in bad shape, and it's a miracle that not more people die. The statistics aren't alarming, but show that the lack of speed limits kill more people.

There is also an environmental concern--a vehicle on the autobahn will pollute the environment disproportionally, which costs money and, in the long run, destroys the planet.

Didn't you mention suffocation? ;)

It really doesn't look like we'll agree on much, eh?

My Volvo can do almost exactly 200 kmph. It's not stable on the road above 160-170 kmph, though. But 150 kmph would be a more reasonable speed limit. Most people don't respect the speed limits.

I have driven on the Autobahn, but it's a long time ago. To split hairs again, I also think that Germany has about 10 kmph higher speedlimits in average. We have 70-90, they usually have 80-100.

No, but it wouldn't be a debate then, would it?  ;)

yes, it is wise to wear a seatbelt.  the statistics show that you are safer in the event of an accident if you do.
in california we also have mandatory auto insurance laws, which is also a good idea to choose to have auto insurance, because you never know.

the auto insurance laws came first.  then the seatbelt laws.  all i know for certain is that the insurance companies are saving a shitload on payouts in the event of an accident as a result of seatbelt laws.
however, my insurance rates are not dropping.

there is a bottom line here, can you gueass what it is?
can you guess what common sense legislation is actually helping, who it is profiting?
Misunderstood.

I know, but I want to see if the other Swede can count that out.

What other Swede? ;D

Obviously, the insurance companies need that law. Simple economics.

150, on the roads that can handle it, yes, but only a few of them can. The E4 and some parts of the E6 come to mind, but most of the roads and freeways aren't good enough.

As do most EU countries, I believe. Have you tried driving in Finland? The speed limits are more liberal than here, but the roads are usually more narrow. It's an interesting experience.

Part of E18 and E20 also, I think. But the E4 and E6 are the most important roads in Sweden anyway, aren't they?

No never been there. But I've been driving in Norway and their roads have at least 10 kmph lower speed limits, and for one time's sake I think that's good. Their roads are lousy.

Yes they are. Too bad they aren't maintained properly.

E20, eh? I can think of a 50km stretch of it. The rest I'd prefer not to think about...
