Cop uses stun gun on student who won't show ID

This is so disturbing; I wonder if cops are quicker to use tasers because they are not usually deadly?  This is the second such story I have heard recently; I indirectly know a woman whose husband last week was tased 4 times by police officers during a confrontation over not having gas money... :grrr:

Cop uses stun gun on student who won't show ID
POSTED: 1:00 p.m. EST, November 16, 2006

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A UCLA police officer shocked a student with a stun gun at a campus library after he refused repeated requests to show student identification and wouldn't leave, police said.

The student, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, was shocked Tuesday at about 11 p.m. as police did a routine check of student IDs at the University of California, Los Angeles Powell Library computer lab.

"This is a long-standing library policy to ensure the safety of students during the late-night hours," said UCLA Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein.

She said police tried to escort Tabatabainejad, 23, out of the library after he refused to provide identification. Tabatabainejad instead encouraged others at the library to join his resistance, and when a crowd began to gather, police used the stun gun on him, Greenstein said.

Tabatabainejad was arrested for resisting and obstructing a police officer and later released on his own recognizance. He declined to comment Wednesday night.

The incident was recorded on another student's camera phone and showed Tabatabainejad screaming while on the floor of the computer lab.

It was the third incident in a month in which police behavior in the city was criticized after amateur video surfaced. The other two involved the Los Angeles Police Department.

Acting Chancellor Norman Abrams promised an investigation.

In most civilized European countries, only the Swedish and German polices are always armed. Same guns even, Sig Sauers or Glocks. In most countries in Western Europe, the governments actually draw the consequenses from the gun laws: The citizens aren't allowed to be armed in public. Ergo: the police isn't allowed to be armed in public, unless an armed criminal turns up. Then they go to the station and get their guns. What do you have to say about this, anti-gunners? It's right of the cops, isn't it? They're our nannys and protectors.  ::)

see the story is really that they have had a string of rapes on the campus lately and have made it mandatory for students to show that they belong there.

they were within their rights, and he was beligerant and refused.
Misunderstood.

Me neither. But I don't like bad cops who make use of their guns when it's not necessary. They do it here in our "peaceful" no-right-to-bear-arms-publically Europe too.

Europeans learned thier lessons from the Nazis quite well.

Give a bully the right to do as he pleases and the fear he creates will produce order and stability.  :soapbox:

Swedish cops are like this: they're very "brave" catching "ordinary" people driving too fast on the highway or with a bicycle without a light in the evening. But if they face the tough guys, like Hells Angels (yes, we have some of them here) or the Russian or Yugoslav mafia, they will shit in their pants... ::)

I have no problem with police being armed; it's the general public that I worry about.

Oh, how nice! You don't think there are any rotten eggs amongst the cops?

But they should still be more trusted to have guns than "ordinary" folks?  ::)

Good. No armed citizens - no armed cops. Not until they need a gun, at least.
