My suggestion is to get the automatic licence now and then wait until your leg is better before going for the manual. It will be a lot quicker to get your licence in the first place that way. And less pain/stress.

Take the test twice? Less stress? I seriously doubt that! I imagine he'd wait a bit longer, in that case but doubtless he'll tell us, soon enough. lols

I'll just suck up the pain if I have to. I'll just take an extra oxycontin before  the tests.

I need to find out about that still. I need to call the DVLA because one of the neighbours made a mistake on the form signing it as a referee and get a new one.

Shame about the mistake! I'm sure there'd be some kind of hand clutch, if needed, though & shouldn't be too difficult to find out about. Take it you've been busy with other things, then. Best wishes with it all, of course, Lestat!

A hand clutch is probably not an option, at least not at the moment with the muscle weakness/partial paralysis and wrist drop in one hand.

I need to get on the higher rate of DLA to get anything through motability.

Might be able to though, at least now my hip has followed my knee and with the wrist-drop issue. Thats really starting to get on my nerves, so to speak.

Sounds like you should get it (although I don't know the criteria for it), it's almost 1 leg & no hand, effectively! Otherwise, you might have to delay learning to drive (unless you want to do the 2, of course?) until you can, sorry. I sure hope they can sort that lot out, too!

I can't delay it, its already been paid for. Just going to have to manage as best I can. I can grip ok, its articulation of fingers thats the problem, so I should be fine on a steering wheel, and the wrist-drop, if it doesn't heal, shouldn't be too much of a problem, I hope, as long as its supported.

Starting to really piss me off though. Makes lab work a bitch too, I'm always afraid I'll drop something expensive, or worse, glassware containing something pyrophoric, like LAH or white phosphorus in solution. I've been looking for a support brace but haven't found any locally yet.

Ah. Well, I'm betting you'll manage it, one way or another, anyway, Lestat. (Or I would, if I had any spare money...) Phosphorous, the stuff that ignites just in the air? I won't bother suggesting giving up your lab work for awhile, though, since it is the obvious 'solution' to that problem.

Yes it does. Small quantities tend just to smoke a lot though. Glows in the dark, smells pretty bad too, and toxicity aside, the burns from that stuff are awful. Got me once as a kid and it hurt like hell at the time, out of proportion to the tiny burn itself. Caused a lot of muscle weakness, although its not responsible for my trouble there. Pretty sure I fell asleep in a position that compressed a nerve.
