I'm glad you felt needed in your previous job, Bucephalus.  I don't like feeling like I'm a tiny interchangeable cog in a big machine.  What do you do now?

i do customer service for a mobile phone company currently. i think i stress my self out by trying way too hard with the customer's, so i need to care a little bit less.  I used be a supervisor in a pizza place, i did that for 7 years; in that job, everyone was needed (or at least everyone that could half do their job)

what sort of thing do you do?

I'm one of my daughter's teachers at her school.  She used to attend a special school for autistic children that was some distance from where we live, but they didn't want her there anymore.  We needed to find a new school for her but she didn't fit anywhere we could find.  Two behavior specialists from the school district tried to teach her in a private room at a local school, two on one for just two hours a day, but they didn't have much success.  They were ready to give up on her. 

My husband and I know that our daughter is teachable and actually quite bright, so my husband volunteered for me to come into that classroom and teach her myself while they took notes.  They agreed to try this for a week.  I told him that he needed to come in and help me, since we were replacing two teachers and he and I could take turns teaching her to keep her interested.  Also, he's a wonderful teacher but he already has more than a full time job. 

He came with me that week and together we taught her, then they could see how eager she actually is to learn if she is taught in a way that's right for her.  After that week, they agreed to teach her the same way we had been doing it, at least as much as they could since my husband is a hard act to follow, and I agreed to keep coming to school with her as long as she needs me to. 

I did this as a volunteer for a few months but then the district decided that they needed to hire me.  They also hired new teachers to replace the two behavior specialists.  We worked together to gradually increase the time and now she's learning for nearly a full day instead of just two hours a day.  The other teachers have skills that I lack and vice-versa so together we make a very effective team.

If you have never tried it,  how do you know you wouldn't like it?

I think I would hate work because I hated school sooooo much.  It's been over a decade since I've even been to school, and I still hate it!  Authority figures, responsibilities, schedules, and most especially people simultaneously enrage and depress me.  When I was in school I couldn't decide who I wanted to kill more: others or myself!

School is different to work. In jobs I have had, there wasn't any homework. Once I went home, I could forget about work for the rest of the day. Plus there is the money and that is a nice thing when you earn enough to make your life comfortable. I also got paid holidays and I liked that.

I need to like whatever work I do, or there won't be any motivation. And I need to have any bosses stay clear of the details of what I do because i have a huge problem with authority.

Wow and i do mean  WOW.  That is an amazing story.   Your daughter is very lucky.

It is good that you are pooling your qualities with the teachers,  and i think the school will benefit from your employment.  Will you be working with other kids too?

It is the opposite in my case.  I tried going 'into' school and it made him worse.  He would act up.

If i have to go to a meeting in school,  i have to be stealth like, so he doesn't see me.  Ducking under window ledges and even going through the caretaker's house to avoid detection.

Were I to become financially completely secure for the rest of my life, I would still find something to do too.

Ironically I called in sick today.  i was running late for my shift so i thought sick would look better if it went through as sick.  It's funny that i was on this thread the very night before. maybe it imprinted a lingering thought in mind to wake up with this morning :S

The alternative isnt perfect though.
I have no sense of purpose at all. I sleep until afternoon, and just spend the day thinking of ways to ammuse myself.
Looking after my neice a couple of times a week is the only thing that gives me any real sense of purpose.

No, but being a doctor or something like that might.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy enough to live life with no real purpose. It certainly beats doing a crap job.
I suppose doing a few hours a week of charity work would probably be the best solution, but TBH, I'm too lazy to bother.

Even if I had my dream job, professional torturer, I wouldn't enjoy it if I had to punch a clock and answer to a boss.  Lemme alone, I'm trying to sadism over here!

You could try something part-time. Work, volunteer work or study. That way you have something to do but you also get a decent amount of time to do things you like.
