Just...one thing. If you're coming out of the tube? At the top of the escalators? Don't fucking stop dead to find your ticket/Oyster - either have it ready or move to one side, else everybody will want to stab you.
In fact, if you have it to hand, you shouldn't need to stop or even break stride - just tap the card on the reader and you're done.
We have a somewhat similar system and one of my pet hates is when people go through the barrier with their SmartRider (equivalent to Oyster Card) and then stop still to decide where they are going. I then get stuck behind them waiting for them to move. Very irritating.

Having just looked it up, it looks almost identical - and it smooths out Rush Hour so fucking much, because people don't need to stop, just tap and keep moving. Fantastic system - makes travel easier, too, since you don't need to worry about specific ticket. Also, it maxes out at the dayrider value for the zones you are in. Just gotta make sure you've enough for the journey.

I've seen people stop dead at the top of the escalator - with a couple of hundred people behind them. Said people tend to get a bit pissy.

Yeah it is a good system, especially when you get loads of people who all know how to use it. It is just when you get the few people who don't - who tap their card wrongly or on the wrong side of the gate (tap the card on the right of you as you go through, but I have seen people tap the card on their left and wonder why the barriers don't open :fp: ) or tap twice and then wonder why it doesn't work the second time. Then there are the people who take forever at the Add Value machines. I could go on!

I'm back. My boyfriend had an Oyster card ready for me when I went. I think I still have a little money on it, but he told me to bring it back as a souvenir. We did go to the British museum as well as the natural history museum. We also went to the typical sites such as The London Eye, Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. London is awesome, and now I want to travel some more. However, now it's time to go back to looking really hard for a job so I can afford to (and so that I have money when my boyfriend visits me here).
