 The psychologist who dx'd me also considered avoidant and schizoid personality
 disorders for me, and in truth I identify with elements of both!

Also, schizoids usually prefer their own company to that of others. They may not feel the need to have friends at all. Whereas I think Aspies do want friends? Schizoids usually do not seek a diagnosis either, so it is an underdiagnosed condition.

 That certainly describes the way I was in my early years of school.  I loved to be alone
 at recess and just walk around thinking my thoughts, or swing on a swing if I could
 get one!  I used to lie and tell my mother I had played with other kids.

From what I have read, schizotypals often have beliefs in things like superstitions and the supernatural. They may have delusions about these. It is like one step away from having schizophrenia, imo.

What's the difference then between schizotypal and schizophrenia?

Schizotypal is a personality disorder whereas Schizophrenia is a mental illness that includes hallucinations and delusions that can be treated with medication so the person can (hopefully) lead a normal life. They are both on the "schizophrenia spectrum" though.
