"Act in" is something I made up, was sort of surprised Callaway knew what I meant. I used it because I seem sort of the opposite to her daughter - I keep my frustration tightly inside most of the time so no one sees it or I let it out when no one is around in the form of tics/stims/other stuff that is not good for me.

When I was growing up, acting out was not acceptable and I hated any attention towards me as well so I learnt how to "act in". Couldn't do this 100% of the time though, so some acting out did happen but the majority of the time it wasn't intentional.

So that is my interpretation. Would like to know if Callaway's is similar or different to mine.

I mean the same thing that you mean and I thought that it was a real term with that standard definition until I tried to google it.

Heheh, it is something I just made up. You have stims? What are they if you don't mind my asking?

The main one is that I pick at my cuticles and the knuckle of my left thumb so it has a big callus on it.

I do similar but it has really gotten out of hand (haha) lately. My psychologist said some stuff about my brain being hyperaroused (or something) and doing these stims is a way of calming it down. Except lately it is doing more physical harm than good.

if you don't mind my saying so i think Callaway has learned to act out a little which i think is a good thing.
balance is a good thing and a broader interpretation of acting out is what i am using to judge. i said somewhere that i worked with deaf people and i from that i learned that what we might call acting out is also a form of communication.

i decided who was i to judge how someone communicated?
negotiation had to happen if there was a clash of communication styles but a few people listened to me and i think they are less judgmental when a deaf person comes into the ER and uses some form of physical communication. before that the person might automatically get referred for a psych eval even if the primary issue was medical.

probably not making sense. they are clearing the train wreck but its not quite done yet.

I think that I have learned to act out a little and not act in quite so much.  Maybe that's one way Intensity has been good for me.

I should Google "active listening."  I sometimes fail to pay full attention to what the other
person is saying because I'm already composing my answer and getting impatient for him
to shut up so I can have my turn to speak!   :blah:

^Do you act out or act in yourself?

i have a public persona that is witty, kind and i suspect engaging. at home - erm. i was about to say that i act out but pk yells at me all the time for not being expressive so i suspect i act in at home as well. sometimes i just don't realize that i am supposed to be acting out.

do wicked things count? sometimes i do wicked things out there, rarely at home tho because i have an autistic partner - the critical moment is often lost that way.
