I don't think it is ever too late to try. I thought driving was really not my thing but then I got my forklift and loader driving licences as well. Driving was my job for a few years. :)

Thanks everyone.

I'm investigating driving schools now.
??? Why not just take the test?

Can't; I have to hold my learner's permit for a year first.
If I was 25 or under I'd also be required to get 100 hours of driving experience.

When I got my licence...many years ago, there was no such requirement. I had about 4 lessons and got my licence. Then I learnt to drive, heh. Ps were only for a year back then too. Now in WA I think the requirement is 25 hours logged in a book. 120 hours is heaps and would cost a fortune if you had to do it through a driving school.

No you don't have to do all 120 hours with an instructor but I think you have to do a certain amount of hours with one. You also have to do a certain amount of hours driving in various conditions (night, bad weather).

I got my P's just before they increased it to 120 hours. Half of my hours came from one return road trip to Bundaberg :P

^I ended up really enjoying driving those. :) I remember new forklift drivers starting at our workplace and saying they had never seen such full-on forklift driving before. Nothing as fast or as complicated as what we did. Most of them had just been stacking pallets, etc and driving really slowly. :D

And yeah Sinnocent I meant that if you didn't have the option of driving a family member's or a friend's car, for example. When I was getting lessons, no one would let me drive their car. :D Do you know how long people have to have their Ps for now?

12 months on red P's, followed by 2 years on green P's. I'm eligible to go for my unrestricted licence but it might have to wait until after the holidays now (I have to book RTA tests a few weeks in advance usually).

Ah, ok. Lucky when I got my licence, it was just a year on red Ps and that was all. What is your unrestricted licence?

My "blacks"; no more P plates on my car, no more 100km/hr speed restriction and my drink driving limit increases to 0.05. I'll also be getting my demerit points reset :headbang2:

I didn't know you had to take another test for that, I am surprised. They have made the process very long now.  And you naughty thing, having demerit points! :P

The demerit point system means that you start off with no points and gain them if you get a fine that includes demerit points. If you get 12 points (iirc) then you lose your licence. If they were merit points you would lose them. /pedantry :P

*shrugs shoulders and mumbles stuff* I don't really understand it all

The cop said something about me only having seven, or only have seven left or something like that, I didn't hear him properly lol.

It was the first time I've been caught for anything anyway.

Yeah sorry about that. :D Maybe it is a ten point system now? :dunno:

If your first time, you are doing awesomely, I think my sister lost her licence within her first year for speeding, she was catching buses for a while anyway, heh.

So, the more experienced you are, the drunker you can be while driving?  :zoinks:
