what are your money-loaning standards among friends?

I almost never borrow; I think there's been once or twice that I have when I knew I'd have money the next day (I am recalling once when I wanted to get something from a vending machine and was starvng, and I think once since then but can't for the life of me remember why).  Bought something off of someone's amazon account recently because he had free shipping and wrote him a check right then and there.

Lending... I try not to do in general, and never ever do if I can't afford to not have the money back.

I have a friend that uses my ebay/paypal account all the time because he doesnt have a credit card, but he pays me cash right then. I dont see it as an issue.

The only people I've ever borrowed from is my parents, and then I always paid them back.

My dad really frowned on borrowing anything, I remember he'd rather spend a small fortune on a specialty tool for a job rather than to borrow or rent it (although knowing him that could have been just an excuse to buy more tools ).

I don't like borrowing either and have the same type of attitude your father had with the tools.  With that and my flea market activities I have amassed a huge selection and variety of them and loan them out a lot.  My wife has commented that I am like one of those tool lending libraries.  Most of the time it works out well

I haven't lent money as such but recently I drove my friend to appointments and things when she couldn't drive herself. She repaid me by buying me nice lunches and she also bought me a present.

I gave my parents over $30 000 (can't remember the exact amount, I am shit when it comes to money) to pay off their house when I sold my flat. Now that I am living with them I am able to save money so it is like they are paying me back in a way.

 Giving ANYONE $30,000 is an outstanding act of generosity, glad you are now saving money.

I did it so my stepdad could retire (he was doing lawnmowing for a lot of people and it was taking its toll physically on him) and so my parents wouldn't have to worry about house repayments any more. I think it was a good idea as they have been pretty happy and have been able to save up for some holidays away since then.
