John, if somebody self diagnosed themselves with just about any other condition, they would be thoroughly laughed at and told to see a medical professional. Yet, where autism is concerned, it almost seems to be an article of faith to be self-diagnosed. I was self-diagnosed at first but certainly didn't try to lord it over people who'd been formally diagnosed. It took me 7 years to find a doctor who knew enough about autism to give me a formal diagnosis. It isn't a matter of a label to me, I wanted to know exactly why I had the symptoms I did.
