The model electric train I got for maybe my 5th or 6th birthday.  It was very, very boring.

But you will this year, a little late, but Pink and Christmas nonetheless.

Almost all the cloths I got from my father while growing up.  He was/is a salesman and grew up in a time when  casual dress was only for around the house.  None of the stuff was pink though, I did get bright green, yellow, white and plaid golf pants.  Much of the stuff was from stores like Neiman Marcus and Brook's Brothers and cost a fortune. All I really wanted was jeans tee shirts but they were for bums. It was all put in the back of my closet as soon as I got back to my Mom's in Florida

I know this is just going to make me sound a real ungrateful bitch
- the truth is,  every Christmas,  since i was a wee girl,  i get the most
hideous hand knitted items,  and you know when you get given something
and the person wasn't sure if you would like it and they say something like
"i left the receipt in the bag so you can change it"  oh music to my ears that is  -  but you don't get that option with a hand knitted item.

If it doesn't fit,  you just have to make it fit,  somehow.  I spend January
knee deep in unwanted woolly cardies - i have to sit there and deface every
single one somehow  "no i can't wear it anymore mom as i accidentally inadvertently burned a big hole in it with the iron"

And now i have a growing pile of well meant cable knits and tank tops for the urchin.

I remember having to go to school in a hand knitted navy blue jumper
(part of the uniform was a navy jumper) -  except it wasn't quite navy and it just stood out a mile.  You can tell if they been hand knitted.  So i would
never subject the urchin to that kind of humiliation.

Sorry to go on about it,  but one more moan please!  My birthday is
right by Christmas (oh why couldn't it have been in a summer month) so
i usually get a most unwelcome double whammy of woolies in December!
blah blah blah

Maybe you need to specifically ask your mother for something you would love to have hand knitted like an afghan for your bed or sofa?

Oh i know,  but the point is i have had to put up with badly knitted,  colour  uncoordinated, things from tea cosy's to bath mats and blankets!
I got engaged once,  and instead of being presented with the normal cutlery set, or kitchen scales,  i had a hand knitted bin cover.  Ffs!

I have learned my lesson about asking for something specific  -  got her
to knit me a black mohair jumper once,  i was in a bit of a punk phase.
She was supposed to put 'holes' in it here and there,  which, granted she did put the requested holes in it.  However,  she decided it would be nice
to have the holes covered up with pretty white daisies!

I don't ever ever ever want to see another knitted item again. Ever.
