Wishing someone would STFU doesn't make one a jerk. It makes one a person with sensibilities. Allowing them to continue despite what you desperately desire, makes one a person who navigates tensions between personal preference and collective good, which is an incredibly complex and human thing to do. Reflecting on the situation and wondering if it was handled adequately, makes one a person who exercises their intellect, which a surprising number of people do not do. I'd say, your situation is a profound statement on the condition of being human, and its to be celebrated with great fanfare.
