"Scientists" who slip through the cracks
« on: September 17, 2011, 04:59:01 PM »
often in paleontologic debate, including on serious mailing lists, ill come across those who want to mold fact according to what they'd prefer.
a typical "religious" "convenient-ist" mindset. in religion heaven and hell are a matter of convenience.
ive seen people try to argue for or against physical features, based on how silly-or-not they appear to him or her.

these people know enough theory to pass exams, and become curators or university workers, and actually describe, name and publish new dinosaurs.
in many a dinosaur primary description, you can find the same tendency, to undermine certain features, or dismiss them completely, from a personal preference "damn, this is ugly. i better pretend it doesnt exist"

there is one infamous italian researcher, who still insists birds and dinosaurs have nothing in common, purely for his own pursuit of controversy. with a almost "religious" mindset, he does everything in his power to "force" his own agenda, including creating a famous chimera of various older-than-dinosaurs reptilians, to "prove" a bird-link. the chimera had no affinities in common with birds, other than the bones being placed in a chicken-like appearance, for the photograph.

and in dinosaurs, theres no lobby pushing for agendas in either direction.
imagine with the power of money, takes my mind to how easily swayed they can be, when researching tobacco, medications or climate.

And how are these people are different from the members here?

what do you mean?
if theyre aspies?
or human vs alien?

i never proposed scientists are another species of organism.
but they do have an obligation to put personal preference aside.

oh but that wasnt A forum, its everywhere i see dinosaurs being debated - including a forum where published scientists participate, including several famous authors, many of whom have been interviewed for discovery channel docus etc.
my point was, these arent "mere civilians", but major players in the scientific community

Dunno if this is the same thing as what you are saying, but it seems to me the powers that be are knocking themselves out to denounce this species of dog "chupacabra" on the basis that there seems to be a bit of mythology around it. Instead they want to call these similar looking creatures "coyotes" or "coyotes with mange" makes no sense

I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

How to apologise to Scrap

well, wherever personal emotion gets mixed into science:
i dont want this to exist
i _really_ want this to exist
ew, i dont like that color, i want it to have another color etc.

i saw that about the "chupacabra", i think all "cryptobeings" should earn its share of investigation, under a common-sense light.
chupacabra exists, because its a small dog. small dogs exist.
"yeti" might exist, because its a primate. primates exist. its not "a mythical creature", but a _population_ of primates. i argued that here, and _someone_ told me all kinds of counter arguments "primates do NOT exist!!!!! no animals can survive mountain air :M " but if we just brush all the "MAGIC" away, we are left with: dogs,  cats and primates. these are beings that do indeed exist.

"nessie" does not exist. all evidence talks against it. motobe-m'bembe-umbukamba-lambombo-n'gungu oir what the fuck that congolese brontosaur is called - does not exist. instead, elephants exist in the jungle.

amazonian indians always spoke of a big black cat.
scientists went "oh you silly faggots, theres no such thiiing as cats! you saw a black panther! LOOOL"
the indians of course go "we. KNOW. what black panthers are. WE LIVE HERE YOU KNOW!!!"
finally, the indians delivered a pelt, and a skull.
and the description of a _brand new species of big cat_ is actually in the works, along with several other never before described specimens of animal.

always follow a "golden middle path"

Extreme: TYRANNOBRONTO-MBEMBE EXISTS!!!
Golden middle path: cats and dogs exist, even species as of yet unknown.
Extreme: FUCK YOU CATS AND DOGS DO NOT EXIST!!!! LOL!!!

I've seen the same thing in geology.

It seems there's still a few proponents of "Expanding Earth Theory" out there.  ::)

Flat Earth Society :D
those guys are hilarious
ive even seen them discuss on forums how to fake photographic evidence better. by now, i bet half of them are trolls
but faking evidence is something that really baffle me

like that italian moron w the fake croco-bird skeleton (to "disprove" the dino-link), or creationists who made a dinosaur footprint in concrete, with a hammer lodged in it, to prove something.
scientists all "this is a block of concrete" theyre all "what the f.. NO! eh n-no its not! its genuine sediment!" "no. its concrete. carbon dating sets it at... last week, tuesday." "wtf NO!"

No, not Flat Earth, EXPANDNG EARTH.

These people deny the fact that subduction occurs and instead propose that the earth has doubled its diameter since the Jurasic period.  ::)

Give me some time and I can find some links to articles that actually got published in respectable Scientific Journals.  :facepalm2:

Just as ridiculous, yes but worse in the sense that they can get pulished in respected scientific journals and taken seriously by the scientific community.

i doubt theyre taken very serious :D
but they "get a say", yes, indeed. just like the italian, with the outlandish skeleton chimeras.
they even cause problems, cus this guy used REAL fossils. he basically destroyed... real.. genuine... animals. for his own cause, he has mixed up the remains from various basal archosaurs - that to him probably arent important, theyre expendable.
"theyre only basal archosaurs, who the hell cares"
well, not everyone specializes in dinosaurs per se, theres many who specialize in extinct mammals, fish, etc, including basal archosaurs. and you know. just cus a mouse is small, doesnt make it scientifically unimportant.
they cause a lot of damage to the scientific community, who now has to wonder what REAL species of animal are hidden in that chimera?
