And I had just moved from CT to VB and was living in Charlestown Lakes in 1978.

I moved from Ct to Florida in 1978

I lived in Gales Ferry, CT from late 76 to early 78 while my dad worked at Groton.

I moved to Fl with my mom from Stamford where I was born in 78 but was always back and forth between the two places.  I lived in New London 85-87 when I went to Mitchell College and like that part of the state better than where I live

My sister was living in Houston when a tropical storm hit (can't remember the name, sometime in the mid 90's?)  They didn't have any problem with the wind, BUT the damn thing stalled for about 5 days.  They had 18 wheelers floating in the streets.  So it's not only the wind you have to worry about it's the rain, tidal surge, tornadoes, etc.  Our house was nearly hit by a tornado from Hurricane Hilda; it hit 3 houses down.  I had 2 elderly cousins who drowned in Katrina in an affluent neighborhood.  Why they didn't leave I don't know, maybe they didn't have a way out.

Trigger11 - I saw the picture of the damaged house where the young boy died.  Even being in a house doesn't guarantee your safety.

AFAIK the authorities don't have the authority to make you leave your house, at least in Louisiana.  But, I know if it's heading our way we leave because of the Princess Royal's disabilities.

CNN has real good coverage of this event.

FoxNews is blaming Obama for the damage.

MSNBC is not sure, but is confident the democrats had nothing to do with it.

Very windy at the moment with heavy rain.  The wind sounds like trucks driving by when it gusts

A branch just fell across the street from my neighbors yard.  I am listening the the fire department on the radio and lot's of branches and trees down many in the wires.  Might loose power soon even it it's just for the power companies to fix it.  I think all new houses and roads should have underground lines like when I live in Florida

We've got tropical storm winds - 25 mph here. Jersey City is closed. Any way into Connecticut is closed.
Seems to me it makes sense to close the roads so idiots don't get into the dangerous areas. Wow - mudslides and floods already and we haven't had high tide yet.

Lots of leaves down here, but the sewers seem to have cleared. There was one that overflowed last night. The room where I am staying is over the boiler room and the window faces a direction from which wind never comes and I am getting the occasional breeze.

Given Trigger11's experience I will remain watchful.

Just surveyed...lot of branches down and leaves everywhere. One medium-sized branch had hit the side of the house and made a loud sound, but I didn't see any damage just now checking it.

Glad to see folks checking in. It's weirdly cold here, down to 10C at times due to the wind.

Our major roads are flooding and parts of Manhattan are under a heck of a lot of water (8 feet).

Some of the flooded roads were not closed but now they are.
