That's a pretty big quake for Virginia.

I wonder what fault caused it?

5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes East Coast

An earthquake sent tremors from the nation’s capital to New York City Tuesday afternoon, the result of what officials said was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake based in Virginia.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

It is not clear how far the earthquake spread, but tremors were felt throughout New York City office buildings and as far north as Concord, N.H.

The streets of downtown Washington filled with thousands of people on Tuesday afternoon as buildings from the capital to the White House were evacuated.

A mild shake and tremble could be felt shortly before 2 pm. The movement lasted no more than 30 seconds in downtown Washington.

Fire alarms sounded throughout the downtown business district in Washington on an otherwise bright and sunny afternoon. There were no obvious signs of damage or disruption.

I felt it here in New Jersey too. My house started shaking, and I thought people were on my roof.

Felt in in New Haven Ct fairly strong as I was getting out of my truck.

All I know is that if another one hits, I'm going out in the yard.

The creaking noises this house made when it was shaking were unbelievable.

My wife didn't feel it at the house.  I was at a garage that was built on fill in New Haven about ten miles from my house.  Stick built wood houses usually fair pretty well as they have a lot of flex potential so they creek and shift but hold together.  Masonry on the other hand sucks

i had a little nostalgia-listen some days ago

My girlfriends son came out of his room saying that his windows rattled (2nd floor) and the curtains shook without a breeze.   I vaguely recall some rumbling, but attributed it to  truck traffic.
