I suck at phone calls. I even drive telemarketers away with my crappy phone skills.

I have heard of a person carrying on a fake conversation on their phone in front of people. And then their phone rings, interrupting their fake conversation.

I haven't done it myself. I don't like talking on the phone so am unlikely to fake a conversation on one.

Why would someone do that? To draw attention?

I see someone doing it if they were trying to fool someone like I saw Dewey doing in Malcolm in the Middle to manipulate his brother Reese into doing stuff. Then at the end of the episode the phone actually rings when he was faking a phone call.

I suppose someone might want to do it to appear important
or popular?

I have a computer voice that says  'you have nine hundred and
ninety nine messages' when i get a text

I just find it funny!

I gave up on my landline after the last election and the blizzard of political robo calls at all hours of the day.  I like my cell phone, but, I don't use it much.

Wouldn't work for me, everyone who knows me knows that my standard response to my phone ringing is:

"Fuck off*," *hit "end call" button*.

*To the phone itself; I don't answer it like that.

 Maybe you should.  >:D

I don't a have a land line either. No more Spanish speaking people nor cold callers. My husband and I figured someone once had our phone number before they canceled it or someone else has a phone number that is very close to ours.

I have a sound clip from "2001" stating that I have a message. HAL the computer is talking.

And I don't answer my phone a lot, except at work.

I have heaps of messages from around 2001 or so on my cellphone. Still trying to figure out how to listen to them.

Yes, that is what I think too. I don't think it is done much now as mobile phones are now so commonplace.
