Study: Mean people make more money
Turns out the old adage "nice guys finish last" is true; and it goes for gals too.
A new study set to publish in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says that agreeable workers earn significantly lower incomes than less agreeable workers.
The researchers looked at data collected over nearly 20 years from three different surveys that measured the notion of agreeableness in different ways. The surveys sampled around 10,000 workers comprising a wide range of professions, salaries and ages.
The study reports men who measured below average on agreeableness earned about 18 percent more, or $9,772 more, annually in their sample than nicer guys. Ruder women earned about 5 percent, or $1,828, more than their agreeable counterparts.
A separate study was also conducted of 460 business students who were presented with short descriptions for candidates to hire for a consultant position. Men who were described as highly agreeable were less likely to get the job, the study found.
