Why have a safety on even a gas-powered BB pistol? they aren't the kind of thing that'll inflict a wound, except to pride. Unless one of those little plastic balls hits somebody directly in the eye.

IMO in the case of a zombie apocalypse, I'd rely not only on firearms, those I'd save for when they HAVE to be used. I'd be making sure to pack a couple of claw hammers, my sword, an arsenal of chemicals of both the highly flammable variety and the much less friendly kind, along with my gas mask, face shield, goggles etc. thick leather jacket with hastily bolted on metal plates to protect against bites, along with razor-sharp spikes located in strategic areas, such as knees, round my combat-boots on the toes, edges, heels and top of the toes, elbows, forearms, gloves with some sharpened steel nails, the short kind with the wide, flat heads to give a good anchor point, brazed onto metal plates and attached to some thick (and comfy) leather gloves, and the thinner of my spiked collars round my neck, to avoid any brain-hungry undead getting a hold on my neck, whilst the thicker, heavier one goes round my head, with the double row of rusty steel spines, goes round my head, at about forehead height, for a fairly obvious reason, that really isn't going to be very decorative, at least not after an encounter or two with a zombie. That, and I'd be raiding the nearest gun&other weapon store, stocking up, preferably with the owner cooperating as a partner for added mutual survival advantage, but I'd be fully prepared to deploy chemical weaponry in order to eliminate the living and dead-ish alike occupying the premises, after first conscripting the occupants of all pharmacies along the way, for both medical supplies and supplies that could be loaded into syringes and used as paralytics, poisons or both. The contents of my lab of course would be coming along for the ride, and everything from thermite, to sodium metal slugs to be fired from DIY black powder-fuelled weapons constructed from as many metal pipes as can be found, hastily improvized mustard 'gas'es, fire-extinguishers converted into instruments for the propulsion of mixtures composed of something like petro/diesel mixed with motor oil and a mixture of acetone and polystyrene foam dissolved in it so as to make sure it sticks to the target, and an oxidizer in a separate tank, something bloody strong, like chromyl chloride (which is corrosive as hell, starts organics on fire on contact generally speaking along with releasing hydrochloric acid gas and poisonous hexavalent chromium refuse, along with fuming acid when it gets wet) to autoignite the fuel in another modified fire extinguisher, the two strapped together.)

Plus of course, more black powder for the purpose of, A-blowing shit up, and B-a selection of nail-packed, phosphorus-filled and thermite grenades to be launched from something fuelled by said black powder. I think I could find plenty use for the sulfur, the potassium permanganate, the nitrates that didn't go towards things to fire hastily-made bullets and grenades/rockets/mortar shells, and sulfuric acid, along with the glycerine for..well..what glycerine is famous for when nitrated, along with the ethylene glycol, and anything else thats nitratable, and the pounds of magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, even the nickel and the copper metal dusts. And a lot of glass bottles, lighters, matches, rags, concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorate salts or if none available, the potassium permanganate and a plastic hose to siphon spare fuel out of cars for when the original lot for filling the first lot of bottles is used up, and as many zombies as possible put back underground. Or at least cremated and left there:P

And then? I'd be going on my own apocalypse. Alive, and intent on A-staying that way and B-making one fucking great big mess and not in the least bit fussy about what I do to  make those things happen, raising my own, living horde as I go along, whilst making anything unliving...well....much more un-living. In a way that the term 'trigger-happy' does no justice to so much as merely hinting towards.

@ Lestat - Does Christmas Story (and Red Rider BB gun) ring a bell?

I assume it's a safety because you have to disengage it to pull the trigger.

Xmas story no, red ryder BB gun yes. The latter appears as a special weapon in the isometric largely freeplay game fallout 2. Not the best rifle though. My fallout 2 main character in my last game favoured a gauss rifle and pulse pistol combination, with fast-draw traits and sniper-style favouring perks, the gauss rifle causing horrific damage, exploding heads, ripping arms and legs off or blowing people to bloody chunks, with even the tiny 2mm rounds it fired, right through power armor, causing one-hit kills of even serious tough bastards of enemies with a shot right through the eye-lenses of their power armor. And for backup, a combat shotgun, a minigun, flamethrower and close in combat, a chainblade (called a ripper in the game, an armor-piercing vibroblade/chainblade hybrid thing that makes a real mess in close combat and has a habit of being both accurate and of crippling enemies, destroying arms, legs, eyes, hacking groins to pieces. But mostly a sniper, backed up by a close combat team firing little compact but very, very powerful pistol-sized energy weapons that tend to reduce enemies to nothing more than ashes, along with one guy wielding a laser rifle, with a tendency towards 'special effects' kills of slicing the enemy in half at the waist. That is, if the main character's relentless barrage of railgun fire ever allowed them to get a shot off before every enemy in the attacking groups ever got a shot off. And if they hid....out came the plasma grenades, or if anyone really, really pissed me off then I'd whip out an antitank rocket launcher if I had to :P

So I don't think I ever had cause to USE the BB rifle, as by the time in my last game I found it, I was already packing a gauss rifle, pulse pistol, alien-made energy pistol of some sort, rocket launchers, flamers, combat autoshotguns, hand grenades, plasma grenades, miniguns, even a modified turbo plasma rifle, that does monstrous damage levels, and literally liquefies the flesh of the enemy, melting it off their bones and scoring an instant-kill with a critical hit (and with a character designed as a specialist long-range expert sniper, specialist in energy weapons and in science and technological repair. I never had a reason to burden myself with the weight of the thing with an arsenal like that, and carrying nearly a thousand rounds of 2mm railgun ammunition and both a pistol and rifle variant, several thousand rounds of minigun ammunition and hundreds of shotgun shells, belt of plasma grenades and wearing hardened power armor?...hell no. But have heard of it through that route., why?

And yeah, although I've never seen a BB gun with a safety, I've had some airguns and gas guns in the past that had a safety, my dart rifle too, theres a push-in catch that pops out at the back of the barrel that must be pushed back in to disengage the safety after cocking it, before you can loose off the dart in the chamber.

That's it.

The Christmas Story is an American TV special set in the 1950's.  Boy (Ralphie) wants a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas.  It's all about being 8? 9? or so and the angst of that age.  Saw it once and that was enough.

I didn't mean the red rider/ryder BB gun. Never had one, the rifle I'm talking about is a dart-gun, the safety engaged automatically when the rifle is cocked, and has to be reset after firing each round. Made for accuracy rather than rapid firing, and firing a long, narrow, fin-stabilized flechette type projectile from a rifled barrel (the rounds have a metal ring in the middle, or cylinder, that engages with the rifling of the barrel. Similar caliber to a .177, long, narrow and sharp though and won't fire from a conventional airgun, in fact you couldn't even load the flechette rounds in a .177 airgun.

If one was built with a custom barrel shape, it might be possible to launch one from a railgun though, in fact the projectile shape would I think work quite well, since they self-stabilize in flight.

Once I can afford it..I think I might have a crack at building a railgun myself, it'd  be fun. Using a marx generator bank, I'd like to experiment with using supercapacitors discharged through a transformer, I think I might be able to find somebody who has a milling machine to cut the tracks in a pair of metal rails, and build a suitable confinement system out of tough but lightweight polymers, the holes I could drill and tap myself using the lathe.

Currently spending the time, using just a beaker of water, before any reactants go near it, to calibrate the likes of set temperature, ramping speed, start temperature, error-correction values etc. of my thermocouple-controlled digital hotplate/magnetic stirrer. The instructions are really badly written, and only partially complete, from a translation of the chinese. Pain in the arse, so I am making sure everything is just perfect first  before actually going in and starting my reaction, and then will quickly swap out the beaker and replace it with a flat-bottomed (erlenmeyer) flask, with the project in its current stage I have in mind already inside, and just needing addition of metal, acid and catalyst.

Roasting a cigar tin full of bicarb right next to the oven gas flame to dehydrate it to sodium carbonate (for drying some acetone);  while i sit waiting for my  now well-dried isopropanol to have the quicklime (and the Ca(OH)2 it hydrates to)  finish settling out of suspension, which the bulk of it has, although it'll still need filtering to remove a bit of solid crap from it before use. nearly done though;)
