I'm nauseaus after working with barium chlorate, but the green it gives is superior to anything else  :-\

Could there be long-term ill effects from working with that stuff?  :-\

And is your work area properly ventilated?  :orly:

It's in powder form, although dust of it isn't healthy.

No, there are no long-term ill effects. If you get poisoned for real from it, it happens pretty quickly. It doesn't accumulate in the body.

Still, it might be wise to wear a mask when you work with it.  :apondering:

I wear a mask when handling great quantities of it. Gasmasks are heavy and uncomfortable, though.

Over here we have lightweight masks for dusty work, do you have them too?  :orly:

Yes, sure. I think that I get most of it on my skin, though. It's hard to use gloves with this all the time too. Well, well.

I use this for dust exposure.  It's light enough to wear for hours at a time without discomfort and I find it more comfortable than disposable dust masks, which chafe the corners of my mouth, never sit right against the bridge of my nose and don't provide as much protection.  I've got a pair of big heavy VOC filters that I can swap in for dealing with solvents and stuff, but the extra weight makes the mask uncomfortable and dust protection is usually all I need.

Another chlorate bitch: strontium chlorate could be a red colour donor equivalent of barium chlorate, but it's so hygroscopic that you can't use it in "common" pyrotechnics. That really sucks, because then you'd just have to add a resin fuel to it, instead of the compositions you have to use now with strontium nitrate (which is also hygroscopic but possible to use), potassium perchlorate and magnesium.

Another bitch is that strontium bromate fulfils the criteria but isn't available and isn't possible to make, unless you have a pretty well equipped laboratory  :thumbdn:
