People make light of things that important to me all the time; I know it's just teasing.

Teasing is sometimes hurtful, even though sometimes not intended, and have read you write here of such hurt done to you on facebook, which I agreed was crappy thing to do. Didn't know you didn't know she was religious. Nice to see you did consider and worked things out.

I think I remember saying things about things said in places other than Facebook,  but I can't remember anything about Facebook; do you recall what I've said, or the gist of it at least?


And I wasn't meaning to say that this person didn't have the right to take offense, moreso that it's difficult to make my point effectively and not offend someone who is sensitive about their religion. I like debating, and having to tiptoe about is restricting.

Oh yeah, I remember now.
She wasn't just making fun of my studies, she was making fun of my difficulty finding work, and she persisted even when I told her that it bothered me.
Not that I make fun of people for being religious (I make fun of religion, but not the people themselves), but I see religion as a choice. My work-related difficulties aren't a choice. I see it as different to make light of something that is a choice, than to do the same for something that isn't.

Yes, just checked. Though read it more like making fun of your studies because she thought they might not be the best choice in obtaining a career. Your studies are certainly your choice. However, agree this is a much different situation, now that you explained you didn't know this person is religious.

She also posted other "get a job" stuff, so the main thrust of it wasn't about my studies. I'm not sure if I posted her other comments, though. Every time I posted something that I achieved, she'd twist it into me not having enough work.
If I'd known she would've been offended, I would've hidden the picture from her in the first place. I don't typically set out to offend people.
Even if I'd known that she was a Christian, though, I wouldn't have realised that she'd take offense, as I used to laugh at pictures of that nature back when she was a Christian.

No, I wasn't bitching about her as such, just the difficulty of arguing when the person will take offense if I make my points strongly enough.

Lol. Yes. Sometimes a simple apology for being offensive is much more effective than explaining how logical one's offensiveness is. Have to remember that sometimes myself.

Ha, I've been guilty more than once of responding to someone's offendedness by

"I'm sorry that you're offended...
*lecture explaining why anyone who disagrees with me on the point of contention is stupid, although not in such words*
...so as you can see, mine is the more logical position. I hope we can be friends now."

It probably doesn't help that my family and the few friends I have view that type of arguing as a perfectly nice thing to do with one's friends. The effect was compounded by my studies; my professors/fellow students never spared anyone's feelings during in-class discussions and on essay comments.

I don't think that people have the right to be never offended, and I'm not sure of the strength of someone's faith when they can't handle seeing things that speak against it in any way.
She didn't proselytise at all; she just said that if I was ever interested in learning about her faith, to let her know.

I know who you are speaking of, and she's relatively harmless.
