Well, pretty sure I'm not that off thinking the incredible wet summer we had is a (big) factor of influence to praecox (um, pre-mature) fucking up quite a few of pears I bought this year. Have gathered a bit of experience eating them over the years and this year it's.. BAD.
And yes, you have a good point about storing them properly but do not have a cellar unfortunately. Ummm, outside? That's not a bad idea, in sept/oct/november provided they're protected from some animals, like insects or birds, or early morning frost.. that could help.
