Me to student: You have to answer the questions in your own words. You can't just copy an article and use that as your assignment, now I have to report you for plagiarism.
(student receives a strike and a copy of the school's plagiarism policy. two weeks later, student submits assignment 75% plagiarized but with a few citations thrown it. In some places she very clearly altered a few words to make it see as though it fit the question)
Me to student: you can't use published material to answer the questions, you have to write them in your own words. I have to report this one too.
Student to me: I don't understand why you're always reporting me for plagiarism.
Sigh. Kind of amazing that more uni profs don't go postal and shoot students. This actually is a result of many online instructors who read only looking for keywords and if those are present give the student a grade based on how many keywords they found. Students post something (sometimes gibberish) with the keywords thrown in. You'd be amazed how many students do this.
