A great many of the younger generation don't seem to have the ability to improvise. 

Can't find a white skirt in December for your daughter to wear under the Christmas play robe?  Cut open the top of a white pillowcase, sew a narrow pocket the best you can and stick some elastic in it.  Problem solved with minimal cost and grief.

I could not agree with that more and find it sad

 I am not handy with crafty projects like that, and I tend not to have such odds and ends
 hanging around the apartment now that I am trying to de-hoard.

Not to derail this thread, but........  My friend gave me the rest of her turkey, including the carcass.  I de-boned it, stuck the bones and the onions and celery she had stuffed it with into the slow cooker.  Added a few seasonings and let it simmer for a few hours.  I cut up some of the meat, cooked some small whole-wheat past shells, opened a can of mixed veggies and happened to spy a take-home box of hash-brown potatoes with some ketchup on them from the PR's b'fast at the diner a few days ago.  Into the pot to warm up and presto, dinner.  Just added some French bread for dipping and dinner for less than $1.50 out of my pocket.  The creativity was in adding the hash browns.
