Apparently this year is the year for the 7 yr locust invasion.

I'm thrilled. 

Yikes. We call them cicadas here. There is no escape from the noise.

I find it fascinating that periodical cicadas usually arrive on cycles of a prime number of years. I think the usual explanation for that is that it makes it more difficult for predators to increase their population on the same cycle to eat the noisy buggers. Another is that it decreases the likelihood of hybridisation between different species of cicada with different appearance schedules.

Hm.. Aren't Cicadas and locusts different?

We don't get locusts up here (i dont think...), but we do get cicadas about every 17 years I think. Swarms of them. https://www.cicadamania.com/where.html

They're two different species here. There was a locust plague here when I was about 10 - 11. Locusts ate an entire bowling green close to where I lived. Lots of people were fitting their cars with protective filters on the front vents.

I once had a cicada land on my sleeve while I was walking home from the shops. I thought it was funny because it kept clicking away even though it was on me. I shook it off as gently as I could into next door's garden.

When we had cicadas here, I had a terrifying experience (well actually more terrifying for the cicada than me, but stilll...). I was in the car with my father who was driving, and I had the window down. As we sped down the street, and cicada hit the open window and was severed in half, with its guts flying all over my face.

I have a very big garage. We hang our washing in the garage to dry. We don't even own a tumble dryer. I shudder to think how how our electricity bill would be if we did.

That way, even in winter, even when it's cold or raining or both, the clothes get dry in a couple of days.

That probably wouldn't work somewhere as cold and damp as the UK, but Brits only change their clothes about once a fortnight so it isn't much of an issue for them.

Yes. The term "locust" normally refers to grasshoppers.

But in some places they refer to cicadas as locusts.

The noisy buggers that have periodical breeding cycles in prime numbers of years are cicadas. I made an assumption that Icequeen was referring to cicadas.

I know how they work. Key in the ignition to start, point the steering wheel in the general direction that you want to go. And you have to pronounce it like this: "Jah-gwah".

That's why I don't want one. Fabric gets worn down way faster and it uses lots of power.

I'll hang my laundry outside, or in the attic. In winter or on damp days I aim a fan at the wet hanging laundry in the attic. Works well and keeps the air more freshin general too. On hot days the fan gets aimed at humans.
