One of the harder things I had to do was to "agree" to a 72 hour psych watch for The PR. She threw a dinner tray while there, so she got sent up for 2 weeks. Three suicide attempts/emergency room visits in less than 4 months. She may be 28, but she has the intellect of a 9 year old and the emotions of a 6 year old.
While I was afraid people would take advantage of her, they didn't. She's been in outpatient treatment (originally 3 times a week, now once a week) since then. It turned out to be a good thing for both of us.
Your first responsibility should be to yourself. Don't be afraid to put yourself first.
