technically the AK 47 was JUST too late to see its intended purpose: the shooting of germans in the plenties

however,
as a consolation,
it got the reputation for being the most widely used weapon ever, by anyone on the planet

hip hip hurray for the Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947 :o

It's appropriate that this subject came up with Soph's karma at 763. I'm tempted to ghey him. ;)

technically, nobody can buy an AK-47, unless they have very good contacts

the original model is long since out of production, replaced by AKM, AK-74, etc.
Kalashnikov produces semi-auto AK's for the america market, known as AK-101, but theres enough american producers making AK-derivatives as well.

point is 99% of what people consider "AK-47" is in reality an "AK-74" or an "AKM"

The AK-74 uses a different cartridge and the AKM has a different receiver.

that may be
but the AK-47 is out of production.
exteriorly the weapons appear identical, so "AK-47" has become a sortof nickname covering all of them. a synonym for what would be much more correct as "ak-derivative"

At least in Russia. It's still produced in 3rd world countries.

True, but in many cases the differences are only slight.

There's books on how to make the semi-auto AK's full auto.

It doesn't take much work if you know what you're doing.

i know. afghan rebels are known for putting together their own AK's, but.. eh..
lets remind ourselves we are aspies here :D
a self-made rifle isnt a brand-name rifle, whatever you do. so theyre building "ak-derivatives"
even those 3rd world countries arent making AK-47, theyre making AK-derivatives,

so: yes and no. aspiely.
theyre the same gun
but they arent called "AK-47"

Yes, a matter of sematics. There's a high degree of parts interchangability in most cases.
