My fourteen year old daughter has found "Nirvana"  (the band) in some game she plays and has  become obsessed with anything "Cobain- ish."

SHE LOVES ALL THIS SHIT!!

Well, so do I, but I know she has not explored far enough to know that there will be no more, because he is dead. I was thirty nine when he was found as he was found. "I did NOT crack!," (slight nod) quite unlike when I was fifteen and found out that Hendrix had died. I cracked. I left school that day and just walked aaround for hours.

I am worried that reality will come home to her too soon.
 :'(

She probably knows already.

Well, she did not, but I talked to her today.
Everyone in the house is sick as hell with a nasty flu-thing. We kept them both home from school, I called off work, as did my wife. WE all need to recover. It is below zero degrees Fahrenheit outside and the wind is wicked.

She now understands that the extent of her latest obsession is finite.

The Foo Fighters are still making music.

There is more to grunge than Nirvana. Perhaps she should expand her collection into Nirvana's influences. :headbang2:

I have always liked Foo Fighters. Their music is a little more commercial than what my daughter seeks. She also like heavy stuff, like Skillet, as well.

For your daughter, then:

I2 has a smiley for everything. Even a hamster wheel. :hamsterwheel:

Skillet? As in Christian rock?

:uses best MONSTER voice: I FEEL LIKE A MONSTER!!
Of course. Great music.

I like it as well. We have our times when we are alone and we both just look at each other and one says, "Hey! It's just us. Wanna rock out!?!" or something to similar effect.

We have a long list of music we use to shake the floor. When she was smaller, I would pick her up and swing her around, but at fourteen, being a full grown woman and stuff, I can no longer serve up such a treat for her. She is taller than her mom at five feet, four inches.

But, yeah, I actually listen to Skillet.

A couple of examples of what my daughter is into.

Play it really loud with an awesome subwoofer. The massive keyboard bass is quite impressive.

It is decent rock music. BTW, I can do the "monster voice", naturally, but only for about a minute or so. My voice dies after that much abuse.

LoL

^Will have to check. Not now, though. I doubt anyone in my vicinity wants to participate.

Definitely going to check out those vids later.

I was going to talk about the Skillet song I used to listen to a lot, then I looked it up and it was actually Third Day. (Thief.) I must have had a mislabelled file.

It's been a while.

Honestly, it usually seems like some kind of vague accusation of wrong doing by some, once it is revealed that a person actually listens to music with a tincture of Christianism in the musical message.

I do not think of music in such horrid terms.
When I hear great music, I just listen and then replay if I like it. The message often escapes me, but not always.

I enjoy a lot of music with an obvious spiritual content, such as Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, etc. My spiritual side lives within me and without me, as the Beatles said.

There is quite bit more to explore, when you have an interest.

Some of their music is a bit soft for my taste. I like really heavy hard core electric rock, mostly.

Do not get me wrong, I also seek out string quartets and piano jazz and (I just love ALL music) a bit of everything.

BUT, when I want to just fucking rock out, I have options!

OH and I have always had a soft spot for bass players with enough ballz to play a five string!

The guy simply rocks!

I wonder if he did achieve nirvana in the end.

At the business end of a shotgun? Hard to judge.

I still wonder if there was some hanky panky. Remember he has a song where he states over and over and over and over, "I don't have a gun!"

I do not want to be the tough guy here, but SERIOUSLY!

But. anyway ... as this convo started originally ...

My daughter seems to have become a bit obsessed with Nirvana lately.

Can anyone offer me a way to help her (she is fourteen, mind you) understand the song, "Rape Me"

 :zombiefuck:

"Rape Me"

Rape me
Rape me my friend
Rape me
Rape me again

I'm not the only one [x4]

Hate me
Do it and do it again
Waste me
Rape me my friend

I'm not the only one [x4]

My favorite inside source
I'll kiss your open sores
Appreciate your concern
You'll always stink and burn

Rape me
Rape me my friend
Rape me
Rape me again

I'm not the only one [x4]

Rape me! [x9]

Ah, no accusation was meant. A little surprise because I didn't know if you were a practicing Christian or not. I have a fluid spirituality that takes things from a lot of areas... As much as I hate to admit that. I was raised to believe you are either Christian or you are not, and it shouldn't be diluted. But there is a damn lot of good Christian music, regardless. Both new and traditional.

I still remember the first Christian rock bands...pretty awful. I think that might have something to do with the stigma.

Nirvana...Rape Me...I don't even have a clue as to how to explain that one DD.

Don't know how true this is, but might help. If I remember right it was supposed to be anti rape...

DD, it's a waste of time to try to make sense of the ramblings of heroin addicts.

I learned that one the hard way.

I have more nuts, bolts, and screws then I'll ever use in 3 lifetimes.

Seriously, if a couple of screws ever come loose I know where to find 1000 more.  :zombiefuck:

Organizers stuffed full of the stuff....

I think it's time to sort, bag, and slim down a bit.

Harbor freight sells cheap-o thread guages so you can at least sort them by diameter and thread pitch.
