China dont call China China either....
and norwegians dont call it "Norway"
and spanish people dont call it "spain"...
"Norway" means "The way/path to the north", which is the old name, while Norway itself calls it "Norge"="North-rige" or "Norse-rige", analogus to "Sverige".
what i mean is
we dont say "nor-way" we say "nor-ge"
i also find a bit fascinating, nobody knows what "sve" means. we know its of some ancient tribe, but not what it actually means.
same with the norwegian regions of Rogaland, Hordaland, Trøndelag. we know theyre ancient tribes of Hordar, Rogar and Trønder, but we have no idea what the etymology is
whats more interesting is, we have forgotten who they are - but nonetheless kept the names. i bet even vikings had no idea who the "rogar" originally were, but kept the name "rogaland"
