The Chinese don't call Manchuria, Manchuria??
« on: February 21, 2011, 09:46:53 PM »
My uncle was visiting this last week (the reason I wasn't posting much) and he had this girlfriend with him from China.

So I asked her what part of China she was from and she said "the northeast part next to North Korea"

I replied "Oh you mean Manchuria??"

She looked at me puzzled like I just spoke Greek to her. So she got out her little english to Chinese translator thingy and typed in manchuria.

She said, Oh, that's 3 provinces. We don't call it Manchuria.

WTF??  :zombiefuck: I had no idea the Chinese quit using the term.

Ching chong Chinaman,

Sitting on a wall.

Along came a white man,

And chopped his tail off.

Sweden isn't called "Sweden" in Sweden either, that is "Svithiod", the original name. It's called "Sverige", which is short and old-fashion spelling for "Svea rike". "Svea" comes from the Germanic tribe Svear, and Svealand is one of the main "lands" or historical regions of Sweden. "Rike" is the same as German "Reich", which means "kingdom" or "realm".

"Norway" means "The way/path to the north", which is the old name, while Norway itself calls it "Norge"="North-rige" or "Norse-rige", analogus to "Sverige".

what i mean is
we dont say "nor-way" we say "nor-ge" ;D

i also find a bit fascinating, nobody knows what "sve" means. we know its of some ancient tribe, but not what it actually means.

same with the norwegian regions of Rogaland, Hordaland, Trøndelag. we know theyre ancient tribes of Hordar, Rogar and Trønder, but we have no idea what the etymology is

whats more interesting is, we have forgotten who they are - but nonetheless kept the names. i bet even vikings had no idea who the "rogar" originally were, but kept the name "rogaland"

There's a village not too far from where I was born called Norg. My Dad told me it meant the same as Norge, being, "noordelijk gelegen" (positioned in the north). Pretty sure he is right with the meaning of the name of the village, don't know if it is true about the country.

No-one knows what "Götar" were either. They were of course related to Gutar, Goths etc but no-one knows in which way.
