sometimes you can CLEARLY spot another white-people-culture

like yesterday, watching a norwegian news program, they checked something w some american, in america, and he looked SO american- just by being a tall white dude - in an office job - but with a "jarhead" army haircut

that army haircut, it seems totally common on normal people, as a part of normal american culture. i tried to imagine if he spoke norwegian, and was a norwegian - in norway - and the haircut would simply not work

same with an american speech mannerism "god bless - " that would also simply not work in norway, it would sound unexpectedly religious, kinda like "and may god send down his warmth and fill our hearts with jesus the lord and saviour!"
someone even went "god bless norway!" in a weird parody of american culture, just for its unnaturalness in norwegian speech

ive spotted swedes one time, two girls, blonde, tall, sure we got tall and blonde in norway too, but i saw them, and thought "swedish!?" and sure enough, they spoke, and spoke swedish!
my mother (who is sortof xenophobic and simplistic) claimed swedes often have more feminine facial structure than norwegians, which cannot possibly be a rule to go by, but i still dont know what made me instantly think "swedish" when i saw those girls - who indeed were swedish :S

i also have an impression of germans as "whiter" than other europeans, which i suspect COULD have something to do with their own little "genetic outbreeding programme" they had back in the mid 40s :S
after all, that is _exactly_ how evolution works, you take a whole bunch of a population w a certain thing in common (not being shiny white for example) and gas them
but to me germans DO come off as... "cleaner" or "whiter" looking :S

i dont mean to come off as a GR here, but how much do you think you can/or have spotted another white-people-culture on sight only? or other less obvious cues

Yeah the german's do seem a little bit whiter.  Not sure i could identify sweden,  Norway etc.   I think french people often look english,
like myself,  and dutch,  although i think the dutch seem a little 'blonder'    it is very hard to tell just from appearance alone.

I worked for Italians a few years ago and my manager, Dante,  who looked English to me,  he said you can tell which Italians are from Rome and which are from the south,  or the coast.  He said 'look at their hair'  the roman italians seemed to have finer european hair, while the southerners had very black wiry hair.  And it was true.  I could tell which of the staff were of roman origin.

I suppose in uk the higher up the country you go, perhaps the paler the people get??  no i wouldnt have a clue really.  Looks are very decieving

this post is made with that in mind as well, i find the whole thing interesting tho, because the cues we may react to are often very subtle.

i forgot to add lapps, who are northern peoples in scandinavia, they allready have a reputation for sporting very stiff mustaches, in fact "kill buljo" a kill-bill-lapp-themed parody feature a lot of the male actors w clearly fake stiff mustaches

i often saw certain mongol/siberian features in their faces too, very often in antique photos in fact.
then again, there are lapps completely indistinguishable from any norwegian

but then again you have those moments where you DO think "swede!?" without knowing beforehand. i could have been wrong that time, which still leaves me curious what exactly i reacted to :S

actually, before GR totally raped the concept, i used to love to get all confrontational with this very subject, racial stereotypes etc, because it is interesting.
unlike GR i REALIZE the total chaos of nature, that you cant make rules based on what your mother tells you, and such,
but ive always found it interesting

its biological to notice when someone isnt part of your culture. its ancient, and its still alive in all humans today

i remember a guy from india once, who called me an asshole because i told him i could NOTICE if a person is black. he thought everyone should be SO PC to not even NOTICE :S

sometimes i think i can spot oslo-folks, but what i really see is snobbyness*, so sometimes its very vague what it is you actually spot

*i suspect all native snobbyness automatically moves away, such as to oslo.

@Soph, that is a good point. In Scotland its often possible to recognize Catholics. Thats probably because they're descended from the original Scots\Irish.

Swedes do look a bit different from Norwegians, yes.

I think more Norwegians than Swedes have brown eyes and also that Norwegians in some strange way look slightly more like mongols. The behavior also seems to be a bit different.
