wtf :S
« on: January 31, 2011, 06:48:55 AM »
for better game performance, i saw a recommendation to update the net framework 4 or whatever

since i did:
my audio is gone on startup, i have to re-install the driver every time, and re-boot for audio to work
theres a 1 minute dead moment on every startup, where nothing happens, and internet doesnt connect
my firewall is always off on startup, but turns itself on once i am online
svchost grabs 25% of my cpu, and wont let go. i ctrl-alt-del it after my patience finally runs out........

wtf microsoft :(

any clues on how to fix any of this?

I updated and everything is fine. Are you 100% sure you don't have any hardware issues?

I suggest that you dismantle your computer and set the components on fire in order to burn out the evil spirits that inhabit your system. Make sure that you inhale the fumes as deeply as possible, in order to trap the evil spirits in your mucus. :zoinks:

try system restore,  send your computer back to before you did the network frame 4 update,  then clean your computer out and try again.  i use malwarebytes antimalware (its free) although it not an anti virus that runs all the time, its very good for a one off clean!!!

i can send you a fresh copy of xp with the codes but you will need to put it on a disc, or a flash drive at your end -  do you have msn, or rapidshare?  anyway let me know and i will dig it out.

my boy wrecked a laptop before xmas and i put ubuntu on it (you can download it free)  and its a new operating system and i like it because its got nothing to do with bill gates and microsoft.  i am not saying its brilliant but if you find your problems get worse, at least you will be able to still use your computer.

hope these ideas help

thanx for the offer, but i simply will not risk formatting or replacing my OS, with no 100% certain backup in place. i could do a simple messup along the way, and im without a computer for.. months, maybe years :D

the audio seems to work at least,
i think ill hang through it for now... i was never a computer-wiz, i sortof learned along the way, fixing fuckups

system restore, how long does that work for? like, how far back can i scroll it?

check that system restore is on first.  you will find it in 'help and support'  - providing it is, just click to start it and then follow the onscreen instructions.  dont worry it is reversible, but it should work

System restore is a pile of shite, ultimately causes more problems in the long run.

Here's what I'd do:

- Troubleshoot the hardware (take all components out, put them in one by one before the problem arises), run things like memtest etc. overnight. Check everything from RAM timings to the temperature of the CPU and GPU.
- If there's no hardware problems, back your most important files up and reinstall Windows to see if it runs any better. Install and update ALL drivers. You can also put a clean installation onto a seperate partition if you want to compare. 99.99% of the time this works if the hardware is fine, unless you're prone to fucking it up by being an idiot with computers.
