That cyclone looks terrifying. I hope they are ready with evacuation procedures or whatever they need.    :hide:

Look at the cyclone that most of Queensland is going to get:

That looks like a big one.  How bad are they thinking it's going to be?

Looks frightening.

Yes, I found this:

CAIRNS, Australia – A massive cyclone struck northeastern Australia early Thursday, tearing off roofs, toppling trees and cutting power to thousands, the most powerful storm to hit the area in nearly a century.

The eye of Cyclone Yasi roared ashore at the small resort town of Mission Beach in Queensland state, battering the coast known to tourists as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef with heavy rain and howling winds gusting to 186 mph (300 kph).

Yasi compounded the suffering for Queensland, waterlogged by months of flooding that killed 35 people and inundated hundreds of communities. It struck an area north of the flood zone, but the Bureau of Meteorology said it would bring drenching rains that could cause floods in new parts of the state.

Witnesses reported roofs being ripped off, buildings shaking and trees flattened under the power of the winds. Officials said the storm surge would flood some places to roof level....

It is mainly over now, with Cyclone Yasi now a Category 1 and heading inland. No deaths or injuries have happened and that is mainly due to the precautions people took - evacuating out of town, going to specific shelters and generally staying inside.

Since Cyclone Larry a few years ago people rebuilt their houses with stronger foundations, walls and roofs and this has helped as well. Smaller towns did not do this, though, and there are a lot of houses now with missing roofs and walls. There are also a lot of trees that have been ripped up and are now blocking roads so now they have to get special machinery in to move them.

Oh, now I remember! What's wrong with that ear? Why do you have so many problems with it?  ???

Both of them are bad. Always had problems with my ears since I was a kid. I managed to stop them bursting last time though by getting a very fast doctors appointment and taking some codeine/antibiotics

It turns out I was wrong about the fatalities:
Quote
The first confirmed fatality of Cyclone Yasi is a man who asphyxiated on fumes spewed out by a generator he was using while sheltering from the devastating storm.
:(

There are also reports of animals - people's pets - wandering around the streets. Animals were not allowed in the evacuation centres so a lot of owners had to leave their pets at home.

I saw on the news that some people did not go to evacuation centres, instead choosing to take their pets and drive away from where the cyclone would hit.

The lack of shelters that accept pets during hurricanes is a problem.  I know that some people did not evacuate with Hurricane Katrina because they could not find a hotel that would take pets.  I think some of the Gulf of Mexico states have proposed legislation to require hotels to accept pets during hurricane evacuations.
