odd/nice historical photos
« on: December 22, 2010, 08:04:08 AM »
i love photos

i came across this one just now, wikiing, ive seen it before, and have it saved:

1905 was when Norway finally separated from Sweden.
the votes for separation were 368392 vs 184 against, so, separation there was.
sweden was of course enfuriated, and threatened with war.

the photograph inscription is in "dano-norwegian", and says "From the Border guard 1905. On field guard"

i love the ambience. its such a different time, but still its not so long ago. theyre sharing a newspaper (it seems), theyre chatting, they got their rifles ready. the confrontation never happened.
to this day, there are some defunct museum-ized forts, with the artillery pieces still pointing towards the swedish border :]

I like that guy on the left. Don't mess with a border guard who carries an ax!  :green:

Yes, I'm sure he was in search of firewood, providing for the camp!

some favorite ("favorite" :D) ww2 photos

From ukraine:

Dunno where from, but probably ukraine as well. Both instances the "einsatzgruppen" are executing jews by bullets, something that was done _a lot_ in ukraine (before the deathcamps became the prefered method)

both describe, in my opinion, the most absolute helplessness
in the first photo, its the absolute helplessness and inability to save neither oneself, nor ones children, clutching them, trying to protect them, but knowing that its all over. neither the mind nor the body wants to give up.

in the second photo, there is nobody left. his face says it all.
both these photos were taken by contemporary troops, as memorabilia of the fun times they were having

similar sentiment as above, complete helplessness,
theres many photos like this one, all from the Nanking massacre, in which japanese forces had a "field-week" having fun raping, decapitating, raping, bayoneting, raping, sword-practicing, raping, shooting, raping, raping and raping the civilians of Nanking, China.

i dunno where i read it, but a statement from a surviving japanese soldier admitted something along the lines of "when your enemy is losing, they appear miserable and pathetic", that in itself dehumanizing them. i think that easily goes for a lot of wars, and a lot of atrocities. it seems much easyer to horrendously mutilate miserable and pathetic looking people, rather than interrupt them while they look happy and healthy

i obviously prefer this photo, despite its blurryness, cus you can clearly see the guys smile

+1 for eloquence in describing the photos. I wanted not to believe that was a parent holding a child in that first photo.  :(

aw thanx :D

and yeah. i like bad war photos. like the liberia-one i posted elsewhere (it doesnt fit here, as its too contemporary :D)
its simply impossible to empathize a 100% to what is going on, but the scene is real, and compels and compels

i love all press photography from war, newspapers rarely use them (ironically, theyre made FOR newspapers)
like seeing the gaza bombing, and imagining the scene without people running for their lives, and phosphorous munitions bouncing off the ground
hell, ill post it anyway, its a very favorite contemporary war photo:

imagine it without the chaos
little stairways, basketball hoop, evening sky, probably a natural scent of spices, too much cologne in the air, exhaust and dust. probably a bit chilly, they are wearing jackets and hoods.

This is a fountain my great, great, great grandfather erected.  As far as I know, it is no longer in existence.

The Belknap Fountain was erected in the 1870's and sat on the neutral ground of Canal Street where Chartres meets Camp Street.  Although it provided a fountain and animated display, its main purpose was advertising.  The fountain was enclosed in an intricately designed cast-iron pavilion and contained a water-powered display of boats, cupids and swans.  After dark, the display was illuminated by gas.  Space in removable glass panels was purchased for advertisements.  Some time in the 1890's, the structure was moved to City Park.
A good monarch is a treasure. A good politician is an oxymoron.

My brain is both uninhibited and uninhabited.
