The US Economy.

I was watching my favourite, one and only current events show last night called the 7.30 Report. There was a section in it devoted to discussing the US Economy. I knew that the US was suffering but I did not realise that it had a 10% unemployment rate and that Obama had not done very well in his "mid-term elections"(sorry, probably not right term for this).

So, does anyone have any opinions on this? I mean, I can get lots of info on the state of affairs, but I would like to hear it from the horses mouth, for want of a better expression.

I just remember shivering watching Sarah Palin. She scares me . She reminds me of those sci fi themes where aliens are in human form on earth but can just as easily morph in to their true selves and bite your head off. Just a feeling

I know it is bad manners to discuss religion or politics, but are the Republicans more a Labour Party (for the people as such. Heavy Union involvement) and Democrats more a Liberal Party?(Capitalist based. More for business and the individual?).

Very true. Is it right when I say that a select few big business has quite a say in candidates for elections in US? Financial backing and so forth? As far as I know, is it is against the constitution in Oz to get large amounts of financial backing from corporations that have a political agenda, and even then, because it is mandatory to vote in Oz, most of the filth gets filtered out. But most just floats to the top

I think you are right. I had it the wrong way around. We had a labour government scrape through here, only because they had the support of the Greens on most of their policy and the majority of Independents. Hung parliament! The thing is though, in Oz, it is the Liberal party (conservatives) that have the best Economic Policy. It is only because of our strong economy and economic handling (through the former Liberal Party) that the current Labour party was able to get through the GFC so well. Whatever anyone thinks of John Howard and Peter Costello, they ran this country like clockwork when it came to the money.

Both parties have gone a bit to the extreme the Republicans are in too deep with the religious nuts and the Democrats with the super PC liberals.  On top of that compromise and deal making  between parties  are a thing of the past they seem to think it's selling out.  Obama lost because of the economy sucked and still does even though they threw money at it that rarely does the job unless it's done carefully not just pouring it on like they did.  He also had problem because the heath care bill he wasted so much time on before working on anything else was so watered down it means little and the time and effort spent there could have been better used elsewhere.

Thanks Parts That explains a lot. I am getting a clearer picture now of the temperature over there. So there is a lack of bipartisanship on important policies? A bit like how it is here at the moment . Are people as angry as they seem or are people ambivalent? When you only get soundbites of information in the media, it is hard to get the real picture.

Lack of bipartisanship on all issues it seems   Some are very angry most though are annoyed the angry ones are the ones not getting their way most of the time.  I think most people are just sick of it all and wish they would stop fooling around and get something done.  The media hypes it up a lot just to get ratings and face it the angry ones are better for that.  I live in Connecticut on the East Coast and they are still arguing who won the governors race Tuesday and the comments in the newspaper are really nasty on both sides.  I myself am sick of it all and wish they would just settle it

I live in one of the most economically depressed parts of the us, so I know exactly how much no one candidate of any party cares about anything but power. Id never seen any kind of impovement that was ever directly attributed to any politician in my life. Like 30 years ago the steel industy basically collapsed and, in the beginning, there were really high spikes of unemployment. MY whole half of the state never imrpoved

so I say fuck everyone, the people that are eally in control of the means of production will do what they want, and only a minute percent of the popution has all the money. forever.
