People a few years back would adopt each other in a legal parent/child relationship.  This was done to protect the inheritances because same sex marriage isn't allowed.  I do know that I never read of anyone being arrested for violating the incest laws, so it must have worked.

I think 'he' was married beforehand, and was originally a female. When I first heard the story, I thought 'WTF?' then realised that he wasn't a true male. So that sort of kills that question.

The guy who gave birth was originally a woman, and the couple were married before 'he' gave birth. I think the treatment to change him to male was done while they were married.

Some people thought it was actually a hoax.

In Ontario (Canada), gay/trans can marry and have all the same legal benefits and rights as hetero couples do. This is why I love where I live.

There is a major case in Houston where a fire or police man was killed.  His widow laid claim to part of the estate and death benefits, but the first wife on behalf of the minor children from the first marriage is contesting the second marriage.  
It seems the 2nd wife had a sex change operation to become female and such a marriage is apparently not legal in Texas or else the guy was not aware his wife was sexually altered and therefore the marriage is invalid.  I've forgotten the details, but it should be interesting to follow in the news.

You mean the man who used to be a woman who got pregnant because his wife used to be a man?  She was the one who had surgery while they were married and before they were just taking the hormones of the gender they wanted to be.  Yes, I don't know where they lived, but they were married.  I don't know whether the transgender issue would enter the equation legally, since they were the opposite sex from one another, both before and after the transition.

I'm not sure, but I think that they probably vary by state.
