Kindergarten and preschool are counted as separate from school here, and some states didn't have prep until recently.

In Wisconsin you have to do Kindergarten twice so that means kids there start it at age four. That's why my mother has two kindergarten class pictures of her from 1958-59 and 1959-60 so I thought she got held back and I wondered why she started it at age four. Then I found out you do it twice there.

In Minnesota, a child doesn't have to do kindergarten unless they have changed it since then. I knew a girl in my school who never went because she lived in that state then and you don't have to do it. I dunno if Wisconsin ever changed theirs or if it's still the same.

I think everywhere preschool isn't required. I never heard of any state that requires it, same as other countries. All the child learns is how to play and share with other kids, develop social skills, they sing and play and do arts and crafts, and learn numbers or shapes and songs. Parents can teach their kids that stuff and have their child play with other kids their age. Plus I found out the cost isn't that much.


My little brother quit pre school when he was four or five because he would get home sick and have social anxiety because his brother no longer went there so he wasn't there for him and he was alone there now. It was very hard for him so mom let him quit. I can remember her saying while kids have to go to school, they don't have to do pre school but they do have to do kindergarten and up.

in norway kindergarden is for kids from toddler to 6-7 years of age.

pre school was, of course, introduced exactly when i was too old for it, but is fo the 6-7 year olds. to get used to a school-like "system" of learning.
like a mix between kindergarden and 1st grade daily routines.

oh..we don't have pre school then.
we only have kindergarten, but its only until you're 6. you can stay until 7 but you have to have some very good reason for it (mostly medical, pshychological or something like that)

Pre school is for 3-5 year olds. It's something kids go to before they enter kindergarten. There is also nursery school which is for two year olds. I think all they do there is play and eat and nap and sing songs and have story time.

In kindergarten, kids learn to read and they learn the sounds of the alphabet and they get assignments like "Circle items that start with a B." That is basically what kindergarten is all about. They also have play time and story time and song time and sometimes naps, arts and crafts.

Sometimes kids skip kindergarten because they already know how to read. But some parents have them do kindergarten anyway because they want them to be with their peers and not be the youngest in their grade. I had a favorite substitute teacher who was the youngest in her grade growing up because she skipped kindergarten because she could read already. I also knew a kid in my neighborhood who was also the youngest in her grade because she also skipped kindergarten because she could already read also.

We used to have that IIRC. Google only showed one regional volksschool. But, we have the volksuniversiteit.
