As to optimism vs pessimism, and realism...the way I see it as the glass being half full or half empty depends entirely on what the contents of the glass are, and who is holding it.
If its fresh lychee juice then half full if its mine or belongs to somebody I know and hold in esteem.
If its full of chlorine trifluoride then its TOO full if its mine no matter how much is in it, and if its in the hands of somebody I didn't like one bit, then its half full. Or preferably full and ready to burn through a few meters of stone (which ignites on contact with even traces as if it were paper hit by a blowtorch flame with a flaring, hypergolic instant ignition, even on such materials as a brick, and it'll go through several meters potentially before stopping, and of course being what I somewhat snarkily refer to as 'fluorinated nasties' as part of a larger family, such as other fluorinated interhalogens, fluorine, hydrofluoric acid, pentafluoroantimonic acid (the last being a solution of antimony pentafluoride, in anhydrous liquid hydrogen fluoride, which has a fluorine atom captured by the SbF5 forming SbF6-HF and a fluoronium cation, which is something like ten quintillion times as acidic as 100% concentrated sulfuric acid, in other words, VERY, very acidic indeed. Magic acid as well, which is just really nasty shit and is capable of protonating otherwise inert-as-hell saturated hydrocarbons and isomerising them and producing various carbocationic intermediates of high and very rapid radical addition reactions and rearrangements as such, even dissolving candle-wax like concentrated caustic soda solutions burn through aluminium foil.
HIGHLY toxic, lethal stuff even if it was PH-neutral it'd be evil shit, and must be handled in teflon vessels so of course, anyone with a glass of the stuff is dead meat, and as such, as long as it'd be someone I really, really had it in for, I'd consider it full enough (optimist)
