I think it's because it's the head of the catholic church and it's supposed to be neutral and not part of any one country.



I notice a lot of the tickets for the popes visit haven't been sold. In one of the venues they've had to reduce the capacity to 80000. I'm not sure what it was to begin with.

I could buy stamps for the Italian Lires when I was there, I guess they now have adopted the Euro.

When I was 20 the former pope visited the Netherlands, and there was a massive counter gathering of people in the Hague. We all were so proud of a young Catholic woman, from a progressive ecumenical background. She had been elected to meet the papa, and was allowed to ask a question (that had been scrutinised before hand. And she just asked a completely different confrontational one.

They were not amused. We were.
