Close call today
« on: August 03, 2010, 12:56:05 PM »
I was working inside a house under construction putting in special insulation for ventilation up against the roof of a cathedral ceiling and got the shock of my life :o  I was about one story off the ground on a masons plank between two ladders when one slipped knocking the pin holding it at that level out causing it to fall against the wall.  The other ladder tipped up on two feet and the plank fell about one foot.  I grabbed around the wall in front of me yelling for the other guys to come afraid to move as the whole thing was precariously balanced on the wall I was clutching.  They cam and fixed and held the ladder I got down but had to go home I was done.  On the way home I noticed I had pulled all the muscles in my arms holding on.  This was only second to another incident where I was up about three stories when half the scaffold I was on collapsed.  Felt lucky today bought some lotto tickets

Parts, I love you.

Reading this with breath failing me. Very glad you got out alive, and then:

It's probably would have been broken bones not life or death but it would have hurt like hell and I do feel very lucky

I've seen family members after close calls like that. And I remember the paleness and being shaken, after it turned out OK.

Wow, that really scared me, Parts.  I'm glad you're OK except for the pulled muscles in your arms and being shaken.  I'm glad the other guys were there and were able to help so quickly.

I was too comfortable with it all and didn't check everything as much as I should have

That is a common cause in construction injuries and deaths. I have gotten sloppy myself at times. I'm glad you are okay.

I came close to a 16' fall on steel in about early June. Fortunately I was able to grab a cable tray rung and hang on and monkey bar my way out of trouble. It was nerve jarring.

I guess your Guardian Angel worked overtime today.

Hope the muscles (and other things that you won't find huting until tonight) heal quickly.

I was tied off but I would have definitely hit steel before the lanyards could get anywhere near full potential.

I always wondered about that when your not that high.  I have never worn a harness but have been up about 50 feet before and regularly go 15 to 25.  Almost bought one once for a church but I didn't get the job

My D ring would have given 3' then another 3' before the lanyards begin to unravel, also I started by sitting on top of the beam that I didn't climb off of properly. 50' up without being tied off is not a good idea Parts.
