Sounds like bullshit to me. He's probably heard from others but it's probably not a virus or malware.

Symantec offers a daily "threat explorer": http://www.symantec.com/norton/security_response/threatexplorer/index.jsp
If unsure, check it first, but remember that they make an AV product so they won't feel bad about all these things.
