Someone needs to throw out some Starrett stuff here.

I hardly ever even see that stuff around here anymore...tools in a yard sale ad even usually = cheap, beat to shit tools.

The last estate sale I went to had tools...guy had the garage locked up tight and took people down one by one, said his dad had "all kind of tools".

Should have let the door unlocked and hauled 50% of it away for scrap.  :P

We get that around here sometimes too but this area is still has pretty good pickings better than most places I have been told.

did a spot or two of cleaning/clearing.  Found the key to the safety box, which I knew was in the general area.

6x25g bottles of dodecanethiol (a thiol, or mercaptan is where in an alcohol, sulfur replaces oxygen, so -OH becomes -SH. The term 'mercaptan' is the older name for a thiol, and comes, etymologically speaking, from the latin phrase 'mercurium captans', meaning to capture mercury, owing to the huge affinity that mercury and mercury compounds have for that -SH sulfhydryl functional group.

Some of their properties are similar to the parent alcohol, and to alcohols in general, although the sulffur is a better nucleophile and sulfhydryl is, AFAIK a far better leaving group in both nucleophilic substitutions and also is easier to subject to elimination reactions. But like alcohols, thiols/mercaptans also form the analogous simple sulfur compounds; such as dehydration rxns of the kind R1-SH+R2-SH (dehydration-condensation using E.g concentrated sulfuric acid)>R1SR2&H2S. RSR being a thioether. Or R-SH (acid catalyst) R-SH->  C–S–C=O–C, a thioester. They also form thioketones, thioamides, thiocarboxylic acids, thiocaboxylic acid anhydrides or the equivalent acid halides, thiolactones, IIRC also thiolactams (a lactone is a cyclized ketone, such as gamma-butyrolactone, used for cleaning alloy wheels and also for, when saponification is performed to cleave the ring and as such decyclize it to the parent carboxylic acid, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, which is yielded up in the form of its salt with the base used to effect the ring-opening rxn, such as GHB-sodium from using NaOH, or from using caustic potash rather than caustic soda, K-GHB, and likewise alkalin earth metal hydroxides, like slaked lime, calcium hydroxide may also be used, or magnesium hydroxide so as to give calcium or magnesium GHB respectively)

I found two packets of blue bubblegum bonbons, a partly eaten third pack of same,a packet of liquorice cigarette rolling papers and 4-5 morphine capsules I did not know I had. Oh, and I also found a full 1.75 liter bottle of coke that had rolled under the sofa, when I thought I'd dropped my pouch of tobacco (I hadn't, I'd left it upstairs), one of my glass H-pipes had rolled away under the sofa too so I found and retrieved that too, as well as my bottle of coke.

Its REAL coke too, none of that pepsi garbage, or crap like low-sugar, sugar-free, stevia-sweetened or diet coke. Oh and two 'magnum' honeycomb edition ice creams in the freezer too.

600g of magnesium sulfate, 200g of sodium bicarbonate and 100ml of acetone, none of which I knew that I had,
As well as a large box of slides and a box of the thin glass cover slips for preparing said slides for use with my rather excellent microscope.

$15.99CDN for .9 kilo. almost a 2 pound steak. $12.37US.

the filet mignon was $64.59CDN per kilo and i will wager they were using the tenderloin.

I slept very little last night. I'm heading off to find my bed in a few minutes.  I hope it's where I left it.

This was yesterday, but anyway, I found an article about something called music specific anhedonia.
It's the unfortunate affliction of a few people I know, who get no particular pleasure from music.  :dunno:

Found several bags of bubblegum candies, and a tin of boiled sweets.

Also not long ago, found a pile of morphine caps, 10s and 30s.

That my old man has the exact same model of IR thermometer the filth stole from me, while stealing my wide-range Hg one also) So I borrowed his. Since he used it for circuitboard temp control but now has them custom made, he has little use for it, i think I'll offer him a little more than he paid for his, so i dont have to wait for shipping to get some decent temp. control.

Found I'd been paid early due to the bank holiday. Means that I've got near a quarter grand to lay out on reagents and tool up my lab. I've been wanting first a full set of sizes for magnetic stirrer heating mantles rather than hotplates. Then a rotavap and next, an IR spectrophotometer for analysis of intermediates and post-rxn mixtures. Would really like a 5 and a 10 liter round bottom 5-neck flask and graham condenser (water jacket surrounding a fine bore glass coil through which anything refluxing in the flasks rises and condenses with much higher efficiency than my current condensers. New vigreaux column, chromatography column for liquid chromatography on prep scale, some TLC plates plus dry ice/liquid nitrogen condenser. And I haven't even gotten STARTED.

Plus need some bits of glass, plastic a/index.php/topic,13784.msg1126202.html#newnd non-sparking motor using fans (PC power supply fans should be ideal) for the glovebox I'm probably going to need to work with (or even open the bottles of) potentially horrendously virulently be-stenched mercaptan reagent I have on the way for a project. A couple of drops of some of them would easily render a pretty large outside area un-approachable without a gas mask or SCBA/MOPP suit.  Been thinking of investing in an ex army surplus MOPP gear kit, the full bodysuit and respirator/air purifier, possibly even scuba rebreather actually.
