I definitely need to blow a replacement large sized pipe, this time from borosilicate glass, the bog standard glass vial i'd been using is slowly giving up the ghost, shard by shard, from all the repeated thermal shock it can take.. Still got my small , short, but very efficient one though and plenty melted-on residue on the dying one that can be salvaged. When I get up tomorrow, I'll need to get in the shed and use the brazing torch to blow a new pipe; one can make top notch oiler pipes using a borosilicate test tube, a guitar sting (thicker the better) and a good torch that gets hot enough to soften the glass, plus something to seal a bit of copper tubing on th end temporarily, for a blowpipe. Heat the closed end to softened state, wrap guitar string round about 1 1/2'' from the end and use it like a noose to narrow the end, blow steadily, slow and gentle down the tube using the blowpipe tubing, until a bubble forms in the semi-molten glass, then a little harder, or use a small heated nail in some pliers to puncture a small hole for air to pass when using the finished piece, the string is to put a bit of a stricture behind the chamber part, if using a nail to push inwards it works better than blowing a hole facing out because theres less of a sharp edge. Bigger holes of course are easier to load the pipe through but smaller ones make for a higher partial vacuum when pulling on it which lowers the boiling point of whatevers being vaporized and allows a lower heat to be used/fumes build up faster and with greater ease, making for less burning of material and far less waste.
