extinction is always the greatest catalyst in evolution. humans count well over 6 billion, and we're easily the most plentiful species within our size/weight range.
even if 99% of all humans died, in my opinion, the world would still be overpopulated, compared to what a more "normal" number of individuals would be.

hunter gatherer societies usually count a 1,5 people/square km within their respective areas.
the total world population density right now is almost 50.
clearly, we are too many.
