(CNN) -- American astronauts will not return to the moon as planned if Congress passes President Obama's proposed budget.

Obama's budget -- which aims to tighten the nation's purse strings in certain areas while increasing money used to create jobs -- would cancel NASA's Constellation Program, which had sought to send astronauts back to the moon by 2020.

Constellation also intended to study the idea of establishing a moon colony. The program was set to follow the U.S. space agency's shuttle missions, which are due to end in September.

As much as it costs this is the future.  What with the Chinese making everything and planning it themselves we will lose in the end.  Who ever holds the high ground has the advantage like it or not they will.  If humans are to survive we must expand and space is the only alternative

Mixed feelings here. I know the idea of Chinese humans on the moon doesn't appeal to everyone, but still. Humans.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand I never thought it was the right thing to do to go back to Apollo technology so the Constellation project felt like a step backwards. On the other hand, the ultimate goal was Mars and that doesn't seem to happen now.

I don't think the Chinese will put a man on the moon anytime soon, to be honest.

I'd like to see more of an emphasis on unmanned missions and less money dumped into white elephants like the ISS.  Probes are cheap, and have given us far more information than meatsacks-in-a-can.  We should particularly focus on utilising natural resources in space; if we figure out how to mine even a few basic materials from asteroids or the lunar surface and process them on-site using robotic facilities, it would be a huge step forward and would lay the foundation for space-based industry.  I'd be much more excited about an automated factory that can gather rocks from an asteroid, melt them and spin them into basalt fibres than I'd be over someone taking holiday snaps and golfing on the moon again.

why would it take all the way until 2020?  they already know how to get there.
Misunderstood.

Imagine if they sent them to the moon and then said "If we don't meet budget we can't bring them back"

Unmanned probes are certainly a good idea, to complement manned space travel. But would it have been as cool to have a probe be the first to climb Mount Everest?

But the future is space were else will we go?   Sending people is the first step towards really living there.  The Chinese I would not mind as much if they were not so repressive and had a bit more value on life.
