Until about the middle of the 19th century or even later, people in Sweden used to start their day with alcohol. Poor people drank schnaps with a piece of sugar and rich people had French liqueur or something.

Because there were so many alcoholics. It's stated that every Swede around 1800 consumed about 30 gallons(!) of schnaps every year, and it was cheaper than food until about 1900 or so. After that the temperance movements succeded to get a state monopoly on alcohol and the prises raised drastically. Alcohol has never been prohibited in Sweden but restricted during and after the Worldwars.
