I ask why they are feeling depressed ie indulge them, but only for a short while before trying to change
the subject to help them focus on something else
I've found that continually trying to come up with solutions for their depressive mood/problem can be very stressful and self-defeating as you then get into a 'yes but..' type of conversation which can get very annoying!
I've carried people for months online when they're been
so depressed that they log off saying highly ambigious stuff that makes you fear they're going to top themselves!
Then you panic and think 'Oh
God, what if they find out I was the last person they were IM'ing befoe they did it! I might be seen as an accessory!'
They come on again next morning and you're like 'Thank God! You're still Alive!'
That person is now happliy married and living in Brazil so I did good work! Â
