in europe fascism is on the rise. i wouldnt say its critical yet, but it damn sure is getting near critical.
so far denmark has adopted a far right government, italy's silvio berlusconi accepted nazi-salutations on several occations, and in the netherlands islamophobia is gaining more and more support. in germany and sweden the governments are trying to combat new fascism and neo-nazism, but compared to ten years ago, its a lot less taboo to be openly fascist.
spain always had their "fachas" in the streets, and in both spain and italy, to encounter openly fascist or neo-nazi people in the streets is something thats normal.
the difference between italy and spain is that spain has a socialist government, while italy _litterally_ lets african refugees drown, which is why theyve stopped heading for italy, and spain is left to take in about half a million a year(!) which, im sure, does nothing to calm the growing sentiments against foreigners.
the way i see it, is: the only reason open hatred and bigotry was halted, was the relatively recent-ness of the second world war.
now that the last veterans are dying, new generations are growing up clueless, theye jumping onto the sieg-heil bandwagon, just like in the 1920's and 30's.
even here in norway, where such extremism is very rare, open racism is more and more accepted. xenophobia is more accepted, and "norway for norwegians"-mentalities are gaining more ground. needless to say, far right parties are allready in power, jointly with labour parties of course, but who knows for how long.
one thing's for sure. when the far rights win the people over, i'm gonna be permanently offline :]
