Basically, what the backup script does is that it optimizes the database tables before dumping them (building the backup file). My idea is that those nasty nested quotes mess up the table indexes (it's that bug I mentioned a while ago) and the database gets confused since the number of rows in the database doesn't add up.

See, the backup (and the optimization) is done while the db is "alive", feeding users with information. It tries to tidy up the tables before taking a snapshot of the thing, and that's where it all goes wrong.

hmmmm.  is there any way to save those posts if they're removed, to see if that works?

oh fuck it, like they're of any value - how about asking the posters if they're willing to have those (and only those) posts deleted, to maintain the integrity of the site?
